Why the North Highlands Are Magical When the Temperature Drops

Scotland in winter feels like a different world. Snow-topped mountains, quiet roads, and dramatic coastlines take centre stage as the summer crowds disappear. And if you’re planning a winter break in Scotland, the North Highlands should be high on your list. Specifically, a top place to visit is around Caithness, where peaceful landscapes and crisp winter skies create an unforgettable Scottish experience.

What winter in Scotland looks and feels like

Despite the dramatic scenery, winter temperatures in Scotland aren’t always as extreme as you might expect. Around Caithness and Sutherland, daytime temperatures tend to hover between 1°C and 7°C. This means frosty mornings and clear, cold nights are common, but heavy snow is less frequent along the coast. As a result, you can explore comfortably without the weather closing everything down, as long as you wrap up warm.

And with winter being the quietest season for tourism, the roads are open, the beaches are empty, and the scenery is all yours to enjoy. You don’t have to rush. You don’t have to queue. Instead, you can enjoy peaceful views, relaxed days out, and some of the most dramatic skies you’ll ever see in Scotland.

Places to visit in Scotland in winter

The North Highlands offer some of the best places to visit in Scotland in winter. Around Halkirk, Thurso, and the Caithness coastline, you’ll find dramatic cliff walks, unique beaches, historic ruins, and wildlife watching opportunities aplenty.

Some top winter attractions in the area include:

Dunnet Head – The most northerly point of mainland Britain. Wild seas, incredible sunsets, and a chance of spotting orcas offshore. There’s also Dunnet Forest, with countless walks all around.

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe – A spectacular cliff-edge ruin near Wick, with winter waves crashing below.

Forss Waterfall – One of the hidden gems of Caithness, especially after rainfall.

John O’Groats & Duncansby Head – Walk along the cliffs to see the famous sea stacks, seabirds, and dramatic winter coastlines.

Wolfburn Distillery, Thurso – Warm up with a whisky tasting and tour.

And if you’re lucky, winter might also bring the Northern Lights, which can often be seen across Caithness when you’re out stargazing.

Why winter is perfect for exploring the Highlands

One of the benefits of visiting Scotland in winter is the atmosphere. The light is softer, the landscapes feel wilder, and there’s a calm that you rarely experience during summer. Even familiar places feel different in winter. Castles like Old Keiss seem more dramatic, beaches are untouched, and woodland paths take on a magical stillness.

You’ll also find shorter daylight hours encourage slower travel. Long lunches, relaxed evenings, and early nights beside the fire become part of the experience. And rather than trying to fit in everything at once, winter invites you to take your time and enjoy the moment.

Thinking about camping in Scottish winter?

Camping in Scotland in winter might sound adventurous, but the reality can be… less than romantic.

Cold ground, unpredictable weather, short daylight hours, and frozen tents can turn a “back-to-nature getaway” into a long night of shivering and wishing you’d booked somewhere warm. Even experienced campers often avoid Scottish winter camping unless they have specialist gear and are prepared for freezing temperatures at night.

A cosy four-star hotel is simply a better choice, and much more enjoyable. Instead of struggling with frozen tent pegs or waking up damp, you can relax in a warm room, enjoy hot meals, have a proper bathroom, and sleep in comfort. You still get the beauty of the Scottish winter landscape, just without the discomfort. It’s a win/win.

Winter wildlife and starry skies

Winter is one of the best times to spot wildlife in the Highlands. Caithness has red deer, seals, seabirds, and sometimes orcas passing along the coast. And because the skies are so dark, stargazing is a great way to spend the night. It’s not unusual to see the Milky Way, shooting stars, and constellations with the naked eye.

Many visitors also come to Caithness for astronomy photography, too. Wide open views, no light pollution, and long clear nights create ideal stargazing conditions.

Walking in Scotland in winter

One of the best things about winter in Scotland is the walking and hiking. Coastal paths are quiet, woodlands feel atmospheric, and the soft winter light makes every view feel cinematic. Around Halkirk and the Flow Country, you’ll find lots of peaceful trails where the only sounds are wind, water, and birdlife. Just make sure to bring proper layers and footwear, as paths can be frosty or muddy.

If you prefer beach walks, Dunnet Beach and Sandside Bay are beautiful in winter. You might see surfers, seals, or simply miles of golden sand without another footprint in sight.

Warm up with Highland food and whisky

Winter in Scotland is also about food. Hearty Highland dishes, fresh seafood, local whisky, and warming desserts all taste even better when it’s cold outside. Visitors often combine a day outdoors with an evening meal beside the fire. And whether you’re enjoying traditional haggis, homemade soup, or seafood from the northern waters, winter here brings food to life.

And if you’re a whisky fan, a tour of Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso makes the perfect winter afternoon.

Where to stay in Scotland in the colder months

Plan your winter break in Scotland the cosy way. Stay at Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk and enjoy:

Warm rooms and modern comforts

A welcoming bar and restaurant with hearty Highland food

The perfect location for exploring Thurso, Wick, Dunnet Head, John O’Groats, and the Caithness coastline

A perfect winter break in Scotland starts here

If you’re looking for places to go in Scotland in winter, the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk is the ideal base for exploring the North Highlands. It’s four-star in every way and perfectly located for day trips across Caithness and Sutherland. And whether you’re walking, sightseeing, whisky tasting, or chasing the Northern Lights, you’ll be returning to a comfortable room, great food, and a roaring fire.

So instead of freezing in a tent, make winter in Scotland something to look forward to. Book your stay at Ulbster Arms Hotel and discover the magic of the North Highlands in complete comfort.

What makes a hotel 4-star? It’s a common question, and one we’re very much suited to answer given our status as a luxury hotel. So, let’s find out the answer and why the Ulbster Arms meets this strict benchmark as one of the top 4-star hotels in Thurso.

1. Accommodation Standards

The standard of your rooms is of huge importance for achieving a 4-star hotel classification. They should be spacious and comfortable, with luxury touches along the way. We offer all of this and more, with every detail designed around providing the very best guest experience.

You also want to have a variety of options with 4-star hotel facilities, with different rooms for different purposes.

At Ulbster House, we have en-suite standard bedrooms and premium en-suite rooms in the main part of the hotel. We also boast executive, modern rooms in our contemporary wing, and dog-friendly and family rooms overlooking the river.

2. Dining and Hospitality

Eating and drinking play a huge role in hotel classification. So, a 4-star hotel food menu has to be up there with the best of them. A key requirement is that the finest ingredients are used for meal preparation, and top-quality beverages are available. They should also be served with care and professionalism in a 4-star rated establishment.

The Ulbster Arms restaurant and bars are luxury encapsulated, with a menu utilising locally sourced Scottish ingredients. Everything is prepared by proud local chefs who want to show off the best the country has to offer. This ranges from dishes for every palette, from hearty Scottish breakfasts to evening meals, lunches, and more.

That’s why our dining experience is so highly rated, and one of the core reasons we’ve achieved our 4-star hotel classification. We also have function rooms available, and food and drink experiences including whisky flights, themed tasting menus, and more.

3. Guest Services and Facilities

Any 4-star hotel standards require extra special facilities going beyond the bedroom. These include free Wi-Fi as a minimum, as well as EV charging points and dog-friendly accommodation options.

Spaces for celebrations and private dining are also necessary, each of which we provide at the Ulbster Arms Hotel. Why? Because they elevate a stay to extraordinary, which is precisely what’s required from a 4-star classification.

4. Cleanliness and Housekeeping Standards

A clean, well-maintained property is crucial for any hotel, but at the 4-star level, the bar is in the clouds.

At The Ulbster Arms, our housekeeping team guarantees our hotel is consistently clean, with attention to detail for extra luxury. We also balance the history of our building with modern refurbishments to deliver the highest standards and experience for our guests.

5. Location and Experience

A 4-star hotel should ideally be in a fantastic location with lots of things to do in the area.

At Ulbster Arms, our grounds are nestled on the banks of the River Thurso, with simple access to the Northern Highlands. As you probably expect, outdoor activities are plentiful in this beautiful part of the world, such as golf opportunities, coastal tours, and more. Ulbster Arms also offers a great base to explore the North Coast 500 (NC500), offering a spot of luxury on your road trip journey.

6. Recognition and Awards

Our words are all well and good, but independent recognition matters when it comes to 4-star classification. With awards generally given for consistency and devotion to excellence, The Ulbster Arms received the Gold Medal for Hospitality and the Hotel of the Year for Romantic Breaks in 2023.

Final Thoughts

At The Ulbster Arms Hotel, our 4-star rating reflects what we stand for. From the comfort of our rooms to the quality of the food we prepare and serve, not to mention the warmth of our service and the care we put into every single stay. Everything is encapsulated in our 4-star hotel rating, and we’re proudly one of the top hotels in Thurso.

So, if you’re travelling through Caithness, planning a fishing trip, or facing the NC500, join us for an unforgettable stay.

Looking for the best hotel in Thurso, by John o’ Groats?

When you think of epic journeys, one that may come to mind is John O’Groats to Lands’ End (or vice-versa) on the North Coast 500. Travelling the entire length of Great Britain is a challenge that many people take up, often for charity. But where did this challenge come from and what exactly does it entail? And if you are looking for the best hotels to rest up in Caithness, the Ulbster Arms Hotel is the ideal luxury but affordable hotel accommodation. And we have one of the best restaurants in Caithness for you to fuel up for your adventure holidays in Scotland!

The history of the challenge

The first recorded walk from John O’Groats in the far north of Scotland to Lands’ End in the far south of England came in 1871. Two brothers, John and Robert Naylor, walked the end-to-end journey. They made notes along the way and finally, 45 years later, a book chronicling their travels was published. In 1960, the engineer and long-distance walker Dr Barbara Moore completed the walk in 23 days, gaining much publicity. And from this point, the popularity of the challenge really took off. Especially with increased interest in adventure holidays in the UK. People were traversing the John O’Groats to Lands’ End challenge on foot, on bike, or even on horse! And our wee Scottish hotel is the ideal place to start or finish your journey!
NC500 highlights near the Ulbster Arms

As far north as you can go, and it’s not John O’Groats

Caithness has plenty to offer those driving the NC500, with many highlights on the doorstep of our grounds.

For example, Dunnet Head is nearby, AKA the official most northerly point of mainland Britain. And no, it’s not John O’Groats, which is a wee nugget you can impress your pals with. As well as being the actual most northerly point, Dunnet Head is a stunning place to stop off with majestic views of the North Sea, and there’s plenty of opportunity for wild bird spotting, too.

You’ll also find Dunnet Head Lighthouse, perched atop an 85m sheer cliff face. Built in 1830, the lighthouse is still in use, although nobody lives there any more. It’s still a fantastic place to visit, and one that’s popular with holidaymakers.

Golf trips near Ulbster Arms Hotel

If you’re a golfer, perhaps a shot on the most northerly course on mainland Britain is in order?

Thurso Golf Club’s 18-hole, tree-lined parkland course offers lush fairways and well-maintained greens and presents a rewarding challenge for golfers of all abilities. You can also enjoy the stunning views of the Orkney Islands and the surrounding landscapes.

The Ulbster Arms has sponsored a hole at Thurso Golf Club, and you can ask at reception about free golf passes during your stay.

Whisky and gin in the Scottish Highlands

For the whisky and gin lovers, there are plenty of distilleries to explore in the local area. All of which are within touching distance of Ulbster Arms Hotel, one of the leading NC500 hotels.

Wolfburn Distillery, for example, was established in 1821 and revived in 2013. Today, it produces incredible single malt Scotch whisky using water from the Wolf Burn stream.

Then, there’s Dunnet Bay Distillers near Thurso, crafting Rock Rose Gin, Holy Grass Vodka and Mapmaker’s Rum. Their visitor centre also offers tours and a selection of locally made products, making it popular with holidaymakers and business travellers alike.

We also have North Point Distillery in Forss, near the Ulbster Arms Hotel, which produces award-winning rum and gin. And let’s not forget John O’Groats Brewery, which offers ales and stouts in their tasting room for those who’ve had their fill of spirits.

Scottish Highland areas to visit

Our local and surrounding areas offer many attractions, perfect for every type of visitor. For example, Wick is a royal burgh and former Viking settlement, and a short drive from our hotel. Once a major fishing village, it’s now a delightful town to visit for some downtime by the sea.

Outdoor enthusiasts will also love the activities nearby, including watersports like surfing and kayaking at North Coast Watersports. Walkers and hikers can enjoy scenic routes, too, while anglers will appreciate the excellent fishing opportunities.

Then, there are the dramatic cliffs and stunning views at Duncansby Head, a history-lover’s dream location in the Castle of Mey, and beautiful beaches all around the local region.

All in all, there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy!

Check availability and book with Ulbster Arms Hotel today.

Orkney Ferry from Scrabster

As one of the best places to stay on the North Coast 500, we’re the perfect stop-off for a detour to Orkney.

Ferries to Orkney leave from nearby Scrabster regularly, taking you straight to Stromness. Scrabster is a 15-minute drive north of the Ulbster Arms and ideal for a day trip to these beautiful islands.

A visit to Skara Brae, the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Western Europe and older than the Egyptian pyramids, is also a must-do.

Road-tripping on the NC500

The North Coast 500 grows in popularity year after year, and for good reason. This stunningly scenic circular drive takes in the northern coastline of Scotland, with all its rugged beauty and dramatic landscapes. Often shortened to NC500, it is 500 miles of sheer driving delight. Officially starting and ending in Inverness, you can join it at any point and do it in sections. There’s no right or wrong here – the important thing is enjoying yourself! Having the Ulbster Arms Hotel near Thurso as a base makes sense – we are close to some of the most interesting points in the region, including the ferry to Orkney. With us, you can sleep, eat and refresh yourself before your exciting journey onwards.

Bringing your own car

If you’re bringing your own car with you, we have plenty of space for parking at the Ulbster Arms Hotel. Park your car in our private car park located to the rear of the hotel, free for all guests. Then settle in for the night. We offer a home-from-home experience, with a Highland hotel that’s designed for comfort. We’ve got a range of cosy hotel rooms, plus we have a welcoming restaurant on site. From here, you’re free to explore the wonders of the North Coast 500.

Base yourself at the Ulbster Arms Hotel near Thurso, where we offer free parking for all guests

Hiring a vehicle

For those flying in from overseas, you can hire a car from the airport on arrival. All of the major airports in Scotland offer hire car services. Book in advance to guarantee availability. Our closest international airport is Inverness, which incidentally is the starting point of the NC500. Pick your car up from there and then enjoy a stunning drive up the northeast coast, arriving at the Ulbster Arms Hotel in just over 2 hours.

A 4×4 adventure

Alternatively, why not hire a 4×4 from our friends at Nomadic Scotland? Choosing a 4×4 Land Rover means you’re prepared for all weathers and terrains. The guys can meet you at the airport or another location of your choice, subject to availability. Or, you can pick up your vehicle from their premises in Perth. You can choose 4×4 rental only, or you can add camping equipment and various other add-ons to create an adventure package.

Hire a 4×4 in the Scottish Highlands and you’re ready for anything!

Things to do on the North Coast 500

There is so much to do on the North Coast 500, with a wide variety of attractions here in Caithness alone. Our hotel is close to Dunnet Head, the UK mainland’s most northerly point, and other sites such as Thurso Golf Club and local distilleries. More local attractions include Duncansby Head, Castle of Mey and many beautiful beaches. If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, you can try hiking, fishing or watersports. Plus, ferries from Scrabster to Orkney run regularly, making the ideal day trip. We have put together a longer post on things to do near our hotel on the NC500 – check it out here.

Road safety and driving resources

Driving the NC500 requires careful attention due to winding roads and variable conditions. Here are a few important points to note:

Always drive on the left side of the road.

Be mindful of single-track roads and use passing places to pass other drivers safely.

Slow down when approaching bends or hill crests.

Watch for sheep, deer and other animals in the road, especially at dawn or dusk.

Keep a safe distance from other vehicles at all times.

Avoid stopping in the road for photographs, and look for safe places to pull over.

Plan fuel stops in advance, as petrol stations can be far apart.

Keep headlights on during poor visibility.

Drive cautiously in wet or icy conditions.

Respect speed limits and road signs.

Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before starting your trip.

Stay alert and drive responsibly throughout your journey.

Mobile signal may be weak in some areas, so carry a paper map and compass as a backup.

Have an emergency kit in your car, just in case.

Check weather forecasts before setting out each day.

Barn owl

Did you know that Caithness is believed to have the most northerly barn owls in the world? And now you can enjoy them on a birding holiday with us. highlights just how special this region is for wildlife. These elegant, ghostly birds are mostly nocturnal, gliding silently through the dusk and darkness in search of prey, but in the long summer daylight hours of the far north, you might also spot them hunting during the day. Keep an eye out for their distinctive pale shape as they quarter over grasslands, fields, and roadside verges, especially in the quieter hours of early morning or late evening.

Guillemot

We enjoy spectacular guillemot along our Highland North coastline! Living on the rocky cliffs and sea stacks they come to breed from April to August. But you can enjoy them all year round. Commonly found along our Caithness coastline, on dramatic rocky cliffs and towering sea stacks. Here they gather in noisy colonies. These agile birds come ashore to breed from around April to August, nesting in tightly packed groups on narrow cliff ledges, often side by side with razorbills and kittiwakes. Whilst spring and summer are the core birding months for guillemots in Caithness, you can spot them sometimes offshore throughout the year, diving with ease beneath the waves in search of fish and other marine life. Their upright posture and chocolate-brown plumage make them a distinctive and rewarding sight for birdwatchers exploring the coast.

Razorbill

And if it’s Razorbills you want to watch on your bird watching holidays in Scotland, then you can enjoy them too along the Caithness coastline during the summer months. As close relatives of the Guillemot you can enjoy both on the same trip. As they come ashore to breed on the region’s steep cliffs and rocky ledges. Similar in shape and size to guillemots, you can distinguish them by their shorter, thicker beak marked with a distinctive white stripe, as well as their striking black-and-white plumage. From April to July, these elegant seabirds gather in busy colonies, often alongside guillemots and puffins, where they lay a single egg on bare rock ledges. Outside the breeding season, razorbills spend most of their lives at sea, making summer the best time to observe them up close as they dive for fish and tend to their young in this wild and beautiful part of Scotland.

Whooper swan

Looking for a winter birding holiday in Scotland? In winter, you can enjoy whooper swans. This is a large, graceful bird easily recognised by its striking black and yellow bill and elegant white plumage. Watch the graceful migratory swans in winter in Caithness. Arriving from their breeding grounds in Iceland to take refuge in our Highland sheltered lochs, wetlands, and flooded fields. Enjoy their loud, trumpeting ‘whooping’ call, often heard in flight or when gathered in groups. This is what gives them their name and adds a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack to the Caithness winter landscape. Often spotted feeding in small flocks alongside other wintering waterfowl, whooper swans are a majestic sight, especially against the backdrop of frost-covered moorland and low winter light.

Fulmar

The fulmar is a common Scottish seabird. They breed on the cliffs, but you can spot them offshore on the north coast all year round.

Buzzard

Buzzards are commonly spotted in the north of Scotland. You might see these medium-sized birds waiting in the trees for prey, mainly in woodland and moorland habitats.

Kittiwake

Kittiwakes are the only gulls to dive underwater in search of prey. Spotted in the summer breeding season, they are white and grey with black-tipped wings.

Osprey

This is a rare but exciting spot, found in Scotland over the summer. The osprey swoops into lochs to catch fish and grabs them out of the water.

White-tailed eagle

These amazing birds of prey soar over the rugged landscapes. The white-tailed eagle was discovered in Caithness last year, after almost 100 years!

Greenland white-footed goose

Greenland white-fronted geese winter in large numbers on the isle of Islay, but some also roost in Caithness, at Broubster Leans Nature Reserve and the Loch of Mey.

Flying your dog to Scotland rules and regulations

Firstly, please take a look at the UK Government website for the rules on bringing your pet to the UK. This covers everything from pet passports and documents to microchips and vaccinations. And please be sure to check the specific rules for the country you are travelling from, as each country can differ. If easier, you can print a full version of the guide here. Always allow plenty of time to get all your documents in order before your planned travel dates.

Dog-friendly airlines

When you are organised and ready to book your flights to Scotland, first check that your chosen airline allows pets to travel on board. Unfortunately, at the moment, UK airlines don’t allow dogs in the passenger cabin. But many UK airlines will let dogs fly safely in the cargo hold. Please note that there will be exceptions for registered service dogs. All airlines charge an additional pet carriage fee. So do check what this is directly with the airline when you are ready to book to fly with your dog. Here is a helpful travel guide…

Scottish language and the Caithness accent

Wondering what our Scottish accents are like on the North Coast 500? Some find us difficult to understand! But don’t worry, we are really friendly here in Scotland! You will learn if you stay with us in our accommodation in Thurso, that we Scots talk quickly! And we pronounce certain words differently, depending on where you are in Scotland. And, in some cases, we have completely different words and phrases! But don’t worry, our language is mostly the same as UK English. And we will be sure to talk slowly and help you out. So joing us at one of the best hotels in Thurso, with our luxury 4 star accommodation.

We have many different Scottish accents. For example, we Caithnessians up on the far north coast of the Scottish Highlands sound completely different to those down in the Scottish Borders. And also from Edinburgh… Here is one of our favourite Scottish bloggers, Forever Amber on her holidays on the North Coast of Scotland. Here accent is slightly differnt to ours, but her words are mostly the same.

So today, we wanted to share a few insights into our Caithness accent and dialect, to help you out when you stay with us at Ulbster Arms Hotel, one of the only 4 star Thurso hotels. Rest assured, you’ll be singing your words after your Scottish holidays up north!

Our Caithness accent and our dialect

Our cosy wee Scottish hotel, the Ulbster Arms Hotel, is located in Halkirk by Thurso. Set in the beautiful Highland coastal region of Caithness our hotel is almost as far north as you get! And here you’ll hear plenty of Caithness accents when exploring the magic of the region. Some say we sing our words! So, listen out to friendly staff and to the locals around the area. In Scotland some accents are stronger than others, but up here we all have a similar Caithness sound.

So what does the Caithness accent sound like? Well, all Scottish Highlands accents are different. The Caithness accent is very distinctive. It’s a soft north Highland accent, influenced by the languages of Scottish Gaelic and Old Norse. You can hear a few examples of people speaking with a Caithness accent on the Scots Language Centre website. And here is a video from High Life Highland, explaining some of the different letter sounds and pronunciations that make our Caithness accent so unique …

Scottish national symbols and emblems

Come and visit us in the Highlands of Scotland, where you’ll come across many different national emblems! We’d like to take you on a journey to enjou some of these Scottish symbols, to help you understand what they mean and how to identify them. Plus, look out for some special flags, symbols and other icons on your travels around Scotland when on holidays at the Ulbster Arms Hotel near Thurso, Caithness…

TheNational Scottish Flag

Did you know that Scotland has its own flag? Our official flag of Scotland is known as the Saltire or St. Andrew’s Cross. It features a blue background with a white diagonal cross. When on your travels in Scotland you will see this flag flying around the country. It flies from important buildings and from our Scottish Castles.

The Scottish Royal Banner

We also have a Royal Banner of Scotland. And this is called the Lion Rampant. A bright yellow flag with a red border and red lion design. It represents the monarch of Scotland and can only officially be flown by a royal residence and a few select representatives.

The Patron Saint of Scotland

We have a famous Patron Saint of Scotland called, St Andrew, the Patron Saint of Scotland. We dedicate the 30th November, every year to him in the celbration of St Andrew’s Day. Here schools learn our Scots history and make Scottish flags to hang, and we enjoy a celebration of Scottish culture and tradition.

The Scottish National Anthem

This is one of our Scottish symbols to be heard. We Scots have adopted the Scottish song “Flower of Scotland” as our Scottish national anthem. We sing this beautiful song proudly at the start of Scotland sports matches, such as at rugby or football. And we also sing this at the Commonwealth Games.

The Scottish National Flower

All around Scotland, you can enjoy carvings of thistles as well as spotting the real thing growing wild out in the Scottish Highlands. The thistle is our floral emblem of Scotland. Scots have used it as a symbol of their Scottish heritage for centuries. We often incorporate them in our wedding bouquets and use them for the groom’s button holes. Lots of different varieties of thistle grow all over the country. Look out for them in any wild green areas, such as the Highlands, lowland parklands and our Scottish countryside.

Scotland’s National Animal

It may surprise you to learn that Scotland’s national animal is actually the mythical unicorn. In Scottish folklore, a unicorn is fierce, powerful and wild, just like the Scots were in clan times. In some of our representations around the country, the unicorn will appear in chains, possibly to signify that the Scottish Kings were strong enough to tame even a unicorn. We have many unicorns for you to enjoy and spot on your holiday to Scotland.

Scotland’s National Bird

You may already know that here in the Scottish highlands, we are famous for our Golden Eagles! As such, this mighty, powerful and enormous bird has become our unofficial national bird of Scotland. A majestical bird of prey found that can be seen often flying in the remote areas of the Scottish glens and Highlands. They signify Scotlands’s strength, wisdom and courage.

The Kilt, Our Tartans And National Dress

Whilst on holiday in the Highlands, you must go for a kilt fitting. Or even design your own tartan to take home! Our Scottish Kilt is a strong representation of our origins. The original Highland dress and traditional clothing of Scotland. Here you can see our true traditional Scottish clothing and how to put your kilt on. But to be a true Scot, it is said that you must not wear any underwear!

If you fancy trying on our traditional Scottish dress you will need a tartan kilt, shirt, plaid, jacket, belt, sporran, sgian-dubh (pronounced “ski-an-doo”) and wool knee-socks.
Come and join us for some delicious Scottish food! And you will be in for a treat as we are known as one of the best restaurants on the North Coast 500. So join us for lunch or dinner and try out our national dish of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. Haggis is our national dish of Scotland. This is a Scottish meat pudding, made with minced sheep’s pluck, onion, oatmeal and spices, traditionally boiled in a sheep’s stomach. Traditionally served with neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes), we enjoy this Scot’s meal on Burns Night, in celebration of our national bard, Robert Burns.

Whisky, Our National Drink

And finally, you won’t have to look too far to find a wee dram of Scotland’s national drink, whisky (or known as Whiskey with an “e” to American. Snuggle up with a dram (a measure of whisky) in the library, or enjoy a whisky tasting from our vast range at the bar. An authentic Scotch whisky must be created and produced entirely here in Scotland and matured in oak casks for at least three years to be a proper Scots whisky.

Touring the Highlands in an electric car

Touring the Scottish Highlands in an electric car is an unforgettable driving experience, offering breathtaking landscapes, well-maintained roads and a growing network of charging points that make sustainable travel easier than ever. Stay with us in 4 start luxury, one of the best hotels Thurso and Caitness has to offer, close to Wick, Orkney, Scrabster and John o’ Groats.

Electric car hire in the Highlands

Hiring an electric car for your adventure is straightforward, with several options available in Inverness, known as the capital of the Highlands. Companies such as Sixt and Arnold Clark offer electric vehicle rentals, with branches at the airport and in the city centre.

Driving the North Coast 500 route and its hotels

Picking up your car in Inverness allows you to head straight onto the North Coast 500 route and some top hotels. This is the ultimate road trip in Scotland, taking you along over 500 miles of striking north coast scenery. The route has seen significant investment in charging infrastructure, making it easier than ever to explore. Apps such as Zap-Map can help you locate available chargers in real time, ensuring a smooth journey. The Ulbster Arms hotel in Halkirk, Thurso offers some of the best luxury accommodation on the NC500 in Caithness.

The far north of Scotland is a region of wild beauty, rugged coastlines and historic sites, making it a fantastic destination for your eco-friendly road trip. If you’re coming from overseas, remember that we drive on the left in Scotland, and familiarise yourself with local driving rules. Roads are generally well-maintained here, although some single-track routes demand extra caution and an understanding of passing place etiquette. Wildlife is abundant, so stay alert, particularly at dawn and dusk when deer are more active.

EV charging points in the far north

It’s important to plan your accommodation in advance to ensure availability and access to EV chargers. Selected hotels now offer overnight charging facilities, allowing you to power up your vehicle while you sleep. For example, our hotel near Thurso has three chargers available for guest use. We have two 22kW fast charge points and one ultra-rapid 120kW charger, believed to be the northernmost ultra-rapid charger in the UK. Public charging stations are also available in key towns like Wick and Thurso, as well as at certain attractions. So if you are looking for the best places to stay near Thurso, Orkney, John o’Groats, Wick and Scrabster, you can ensure your electric vehicle stays powered up throughout your journey with us.

Exploring our region sustainably

Driving in the Scottish Highlands by electric car allows you to visit its many attractions with minimal environmental impact. Here in the far north, there is so much to discover! The Castle of Mey, once the beloved retreat of the Queen Mother, is a must-see with stunning gardens and coastal views.
