<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The best things to do in Wick: Our 6 highlights</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Planning a visit to Wick in the Highlands, Scotland? You&#8217;ll find there&#8217;s far more to this historic coastal town than first meets the eye. It sits along the famous <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/north-coast-500/">North Coast 500 route </a>and acts as a popular stop for travellers, with plenty to see and do for all ages.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you&#8217;re looking for somewhere to stay, choose the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> for a comfortable base close to many of the region’s top attractions. This four-star hotel offers well-appointed rooms, an à <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/eat/">la carte restaurant</a>, a <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/drink/">bar</a>, and a library for downtime after a day of exploring. However, if you’re visiting during the peak summer months, it’s worth <a href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&amp;adults=1&amp;_gl=1*1hhjq4y*_gcl_au*MTI0NDMzMzE5Ni4xNzgyNDYyMDM4*_ga*MTQxMzk1NzA3Ni4xNzgyNDYyMDM3*_ga_FVTZRRGRDS*czE3ODI3MzQyMjckbzQkZzEkdDE3ODI3MzQzMDAkajYwJGwwJGgxMjQwMDc0NDY2JGRtb1Zhb1U0Qng5X1ZRc3MzRXRWMTAxNy05YVd5Q0xNdXRB">booking early</a>. And if you&#8217;re planning a winter or autumn visit, we have year-round availability.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once your stay is sorted, you can start planning your trip with our pick of the best <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/">things to do </a>in Wick, Caithness, starting with a fantastic Scottish castle.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit the Castle of Old Wick ruins</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perched on the cliffs overlooking the North Sea, the <a href="https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit/all/castle-of-old-wick/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Castle of Old Wick</a> (locally known as &#8216;Old Man of Wick&#8217;) is one of Scotland’s oldest surviving castles. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s believed to have been built by Earl Harald Maddadson in the 12th century. However, much of the surviving masonry is generally thought to date from the 15th century or later. This suggests the castle may have undergone constant expansion and development over the centuries.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sadly, coastal erosion has caused parts of the seaward-facing walls to collapse. Today, all that remains is its four-storey tower, which once would have dominated the coastline.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Old-castle-of-wick-1024x720.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4636" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Old-castle-of-wick-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Old-castle-of-wick-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Old-castle-of-wick-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Old-castle-of-wick-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Old-castle-of-wick.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re planning on heading to The Castle of Wick during the summer months, it’s worth organising your Wick accommodation early. Just a short drive away is the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">Ulbster Arms</a>, rated among the best hotels in Wick, Scotland, and the surrounding regions. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stroll along Wick harbour</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-harbour-1024x720.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4637" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-harbour-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-harbour-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-harbour-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-harbour-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-harbour.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.wickharbour.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wick Harbour</a> was once among the most important herring ports in Europe. That boom period in the 19th century shaped much of the town you see today. Although its scale has changed dramatically over the centuries, the harbour is still home to working fishing boats and small leisure vessels. Visitors flock here to get a real insight into the town&#8217;s seafaring past.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While strolling along the waterfront, you’ll spot a few key historic buildings. Firstly, the red herring mart, which was constructed in 1892 and is particularly notable as Scotland’s first purpose-built fish sales facility. Close by is the former 1915 lifeboat shed. You’ll also come across the information board, detailing how the harbour once held tightly packed fleets of herring boats at its peak.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Staying somewhere local like the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/">Ulbster Arms</a> means you’re close enough to visit the waterfront whenever you wish to get away from it all. You can easily slip out for a slow morning stroll or a relaxed evening and watch the world go by.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Take a tour of Old Pulteney Distillery</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whisky enthusiasts will be in their element with a visit to the <a href="https://oldpulteney.com/pages/visit-us?srsltid=AfmBOory_-BPKnF3nHBGrws10RcBSr_goi2OlmT68OPxIEQ1_0f5CZjT" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Old Pulteney Distillery</a>. Established in 1826, it stands as one of Scotland’s most northerly mainland distilleries. Its location right beside the harbour has also played a real role in shaping the identity and flavour of its whiskey production. Often called the “maritime malt,” Old Pulteney is known for its subtle hint of saltiness. It carries a subtle nod to the North Sea and the town’s sailing heritage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Guided tours take you behind the scenes of each stage of production. You’ll see everything from the early stages of milling and mashing, right through fermentation and distillation in the traditional copper stills. Finally, it&#8217;s onto the ageing process in oak casks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/wick-whiskey-1024x720.jpg" alt="Enjoy a guided tour at Old Pulteney Distillery - the best things to do in Wick. " class="wp-image-4638" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/wick-whiskey-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/wick-whiskey-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/wick-whiskey-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/wick-whiskey-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/wick-whiskey.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And of course, it all wraps up in the best possible way – with a tasting! At the end of the tour, you&#8217;ll get to try a few different expressions of cask and age.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re keen to explore more local whiskies, head back to the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/drink/">lounge bar </a>at the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a>. You’ll find a solid selection of Scottish whiskies on offer, including well-known Highland drams alongside smaller regional producers<strong>.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Take a selfie on the world&#8217;s shortest street!</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Measuring just 6 feet 9 inches long, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebenezer_Place,_Wick" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ebenezer Place in Wick </a>officially holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest street in the world. If you’re based nearby at the Ulbster Arms, it’s well worth working into your itinerary while you’re in the area.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="The Worlds Shortest Street: Ebenezer Place" width="540" height="960" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CrVHKPBCuEc?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ll find it tucked into the corner of a building rather than running between rows of houses. However, it&#8217;s easy to walk past without even noticing it, so keep your eyes peeled. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The “street” itself consists of a single address sign on the side of what was once Mackays Hotel. When the building was constructed in the 1880s, it was required to have a registered street name. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, visitors actively seek it out as a quirky photo stop in the town centre. This makes it one of Wick’s most talked-about curiosities.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit the Wick Heritage Museum</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want to explore the history of the town, spend an afternoon at the <a href="https://www.wickheritage.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wick Heritage Museum</a>. And for those staying at the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">Ulbster Arms,</a> this attraction works well as part of a full day out in Wick. From the hotel&#8217;s location in Halkirk, you&#8217;ll reach the museum in as little as 25 minutes by car.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Wick Heritage Centre and Museum in the North Highlands" width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/s3BVld9cXiA?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set across a group of historic buildings in Pulteneytown, the museum traces Wick’s journey from a small coastal community to one of the busiest herring ports in Europe. It was first established in 1971 and has grown into a detailed record of local life and industry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Inside, you can explore exhibits focused on Wick&#8217;s fishing industry. Plus, you can walk through recreated period rooms that convey how people lived and worked in different eras. One of the standout features is the Johnston Collection, an extensive photographic archive that documents over a century of life in the region.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Run by dedicated local volunteers, the museum feels extremely personal. The stories and memories of local people shape it. These are the people who have lived and worked in the area, so don&#8217;t be afraid to ask questions!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit Noss Head Lighthouse</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While staying at the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/">Ulbster Arms</a>, it’s well worth making time to see one of the area’s most striking coastal spots: the<a href="https://www.nlb.org.uk/lighthouses/noss-head/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Noss Head Lighthouse</a> just outside Wick.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Noss-Head-Lighthouse-1024x720.jpg" alt="Noss Head Lighthouse is one of the key things to do in Wick." class="wp-image-4640" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Noss-Head-Lighthouse-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Noss-Head-Lighthouse-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Noss-Head-Lighthouse-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Noss-Head-Lighthouse-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Noss-Head-Lighthouse.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The lighthouse sits at the tip of the Noss Head peninsula, a rugged stretch of land on the north-east coast of Caithness that looks out across <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinclairs_Bay" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sinclair’s Bay</a>. Completed in 1849, it was built to guide ships safely through these challenging, exposed waters. The weather in Wick, Scotland, can be quite changeable, and it’s not unusual for strong winds to sweep in off the North Sea. Paired with hidden reefs, navigation can be particularly hazardous for fishing and trading ships.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, people come here mainly for the scenery, and it’s easy to see why. The walking paths around the headland open up into sweeping coastal views. On calmer days, you’ll often see seabirds gliding above. If you look out far enough to see, there’s always a chance of spotting seals or even dolphins.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where is Wick?</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-coastline-1024x720.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4635" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-coastline-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-coastline-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-coastline-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-coastline-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wick-coastline.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wick,_Caithness" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wick, Scotland,</a> is a coastal town in the historic county of Caithness. It sits where the <a href="https://www.wickriver.co.uk/about-wick-river/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wick River</a> meets the North Sea. Geographically, it’s one of the northernmost towns on the Scottish mainland. It&#8217;s roughly 20 miles (32 km) south of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_o%27_Groats" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John o’ Groats</a>, one of the UK’s most well-known landmarks.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Visit Dunnet Head Lighthouse: the most northern point in UK</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many visitors travelling to the far north of Scotland mistakenly believe that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_o%27_Groats" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John O&#8217;Groats</a> is the most northern point in the UK. However, you may be surprised to know that that&#8217;s not exactly true. Although it has earned worldwide recognition as the finishing point of the famous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land%27s_End_to_John_o%27_Groats" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Land&#8217;s End to John O&#8217;Groats route</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunnet_Head" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dunnet Head</a> is the <em>real </em>northernmost tip of Britain. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And over the years, this headland has become one of the key <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/">things to do in John O’Groats </a>and the wider area. It&#8217;s famed for its spectacular scenery overlooking the Orkney Islands and the iconic<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunnet_Head_Lighthouse" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Dunnet Head Lighthouse</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="The Story of Dunnet Head Lighthouse | Scotland&amp;apos;s History" width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7zhgzIP3uLE?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And while Dunnet feels wonderfully remote, you don&#8217;t have to sacrifice comfort to experience this rugged part of the world. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because under an hour away, <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> offers luxurious four-star accommodation in Halkirk, Caithness. It&#8217;s therefore the perfect base for exploring Scotland&#8217;s northern coastline. What&#8217;s more, you&#8217;ll be greeted with warm Highland hospitality, good food, and stylish, comfortable rooms. What more could you ask for?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, onto the real most northern point in the UK.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Where is Dunnet Head</strong> &#8211; <strong>the most northern point in the UK</strong>? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dunnet Head sits around 10 miles west of John O’Groats and just a 20-minute drive from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurso" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thurso</a>. If you&#8217;re driving here, the Dunnet Head car park costs £5 for 24 hours. There are also several dedicated spaces for motorhomes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-1024x720.jpg" alt="Dunnet Head Lighthouse aerial view - the most northern point in the UK." class="wp-image-552" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Dunnet Head, you can reach the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">Ulbster Arms Hotel </a>by car in around an hour. The route takes you south through some of the most striking Highland scenery, where dramatic coastal views gradually shift into wide-open moorland. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And in our opinion, this journey is a real experience in itself that needs to be seen first-hand to be fully appreciated.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dunnet Head lighthouse: History and the Stevenson legacy</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perched dramatically on the cliffs Easter Head, Dunnet Head Lighthouse has guided vessels on the Penland First since the beginning of the 19th century. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Its construction was completed in 1831, built under the direction of<a href="https://blog.engineshed.scot/2020/08/06/5-things-about-robert-stevenson/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Robert Stevenson </a>(Scotland’s most renowned civil engineer). Stevenson dedicated much of his career to improving maritime safety around Scotland’s coastline. Today, his legacy still lives on around the Scottish coastlines, and many of the country’s modern lighthouses reflect his influence in their design and structure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-Head-lighthouse-1-1024x720.jpg" alt="Dunnet Lighthouse - the most northern point in the UK" class="wp-image-4612" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-Head-lighthouse-1-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-Head-lighthouse-1-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-Head-lighthouse-1-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-Head-lighthouse-1-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-Head-lighthouse-1.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Dunnet Lighthouse &#8211; the most northern point in the UK</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And here’s a fun fact: Robert Stevenson was the grandfather of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Robert-Louis-Stevenson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Robert Louis Stevenson</a>, born in 1850. He was the renowned author of novels, including <em>Treasure Island</em> and <em>Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, Dunnet Head Lighthouse is still fully operational. Whilst it isn’t open to the public, visitors from across the globe venture here to witness the outstanding scenery. Standing at the edge of the cliffs, you’re met with vast, uninterrupted views across the sea to the Orkney Islands. And on a clear day, the panoramic outlook really is a feast for the senses.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a day being windswept out at Dunnet Head, there’s not much better than heading back to warm and welcoming accommodation. A short drive brings you back to the Ulbster Arms Hotel, where you can properly unwind after a day of sightseeing. And as well as staying in some of the most beautiful <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">4-star accommodation</a> in Northern Scotland, you can enjoy a hearty meal in our <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/eat/">restaurant</a>, or enjoy a tipple or two in our <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/drink/">lounge bar</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What to see and do at Dunnet Head: the most northern point in UK</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alongside its famous lighthouse, Dunnet Head offers far more than meets the eye. Simple walking routes take you across the headland and open out onto a series of coastal viewing platforms. In fact, the Dunnet Head viewpoints are considered among the best in the world. And on a sunny day, find a quiet spot on the headland with a picnic, and simply watch the world go by.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dogs on leads are also welcome at Dunnet Head. In addition, the Ulbster Hotel offers <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/dog-friendly-rooms/">dog-friendly rooms</a>, meaning your four-legged companion can join you for the trip too.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dunnet-head-landscape-1024x720.jpg" alt="Dunnet head landscape - the most northern point in the UK" class="wp-image-4616" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dunnet-head-landscape-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dunnet-head-landscape-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dunnet-head-landscape-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dunnet-head-landscape-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dunnet-head-landscape.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Dunnet Head landscape &#8211; the most northern point in the UK</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dunnet Head also a favourite spot amongst photographers. The natural landscape and shifting conditions consistently produce spectacular high-impact images. Expect wide, uninterrupted views in almost every direction, cliff lines that naturally frame the scene, and fast-changing light as weather systems move across the northern coast. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want to avoid the crowds, aim for an early morning visit or head out later in the evening. When you&#8217;re in a great stopover hotel like the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">Ulbster Arms,</a> you can get here without having to travel too far.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wildlife is a real highlight here, too, especially in the summer months. Keep an eye on the cliff edges for the famous <a href="https://www.birdingplaces.eu/en/birdingplaces/united-kingdom/rspb-dunnet-head" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dunnet Head puffins</a>, for example. Many visitors also catch sightings of guillemots, razorbills, and kittiwakes. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if conditions are still, you may be lucky enough to spot seals along the shoreline below. Dolphins and porpoises sometimes peek between the waves out in the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/pentland-firth" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pentland Firth</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to get to Dunnet Head, Scotland</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From Southern Scotland (Edinburgh/Glasgow)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most direct driving route is to follow the A9 north through Perth and Inverness, continuing on towards Thurso. From Thurso, it’s a straightforward 30-minute drive north-west along rural roads to Dunnet Head.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The journey from Edinburgh or Glasgow is around 6 hours (roughly 270 miles) by car. Follow the A9 north through the Highlands to get there. The <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> works as a convenient stop off once you’re in the far north. To get to the hotel from Inverness, continue up the A9 past Dornoch, Golspie, and Helmsdale. Follow the coastal road as it heads into Caithness, stay on the A9 beyond Helmsdale, then take the turn-off for Halkirk as you approach the Thurso area.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Driving-through-Scottish-Highlands-1024x720.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4617" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Driving-through-Scottish-Highlands-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Driving-through-Scottish-Highlands-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Driving-through-Scottish-Highlands-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Driving-through-Scottish-Highlands-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Driving-through-Scottish-Highlands.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And finally, if you’re using public transport, take the <a href="https://www.scotrail.co.uk/inspiration-hub/great-scenic-rail-journeys/far-north-line-inverness-thurso-wick">Far North Line train </a>from Inverness up to Thurso. Then, finish the journey by taxi or a local bus to Dunnet Head, or to the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">Ulbster Arms Hotel.</a></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From major Scottish airports</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Scotland’s main airports, travel typically routes via Inverness. Inverness Airport is the closest option, with a drive of around 3 hours to Thurso and then onward to Dunnet Head.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Edinburgh or Glasgow airport, you’ll need to reach Inverness, either by plane, train, or car, before heading north for Dunnet Head.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Aberdeen, you can take a longer coastal drive, but most travellers still choose the A9 via Inverness because it’s the most reliable and direct route into Caithness.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Plan your stay at one of the best hotels in John O’ Groats: The Ulbster Arms</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Planning a successful trip to Dunnet Head is also about choosing <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">accommodation</a> that helps you properly unwind after a full day of exploring the far north. Given the remote setting as the most northern point in the UK, staying at a well-located hotel provides a convenient base to rest while remaining close to key Caithness sights.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why is it called John O&#8217;Groats?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, you might be wondering – why is it actually called John O’Groats? Today, visitors of the area venture to the mound where the house once stood.</p>

And, just a stone&#8217;s throw away is the <a href="https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit/all/ring-of-brodgar-stone-circle-and-henge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ring of Brodgar</a>, a huge Neolithic stone circle, dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can also visit <a href="https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit/all/maeshowe-chambered-cairn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maeshowe Chambered Cairn</a>, an impressive burial tomb built into a grassy mound. Inside, you’ll not only see remarkable Neolithic construction, but also Viking-era carvings left behind hundreds of years later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main town of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkwall" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kirkwall </a>is also worth a wander. You could spend a few hours here visiting the<a href="https://www.stmagnus.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> St Magnus Cathedral</a> and taking a stroll along the harbour.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you’re back in John O’Groats, the natural place to stop is the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> for a well-earned lunch. If you remember to plan this little pit stop into your itinerary, it takes the pressure off finding somewhere to eat on the day. We&#8217;re also located close to the Scrabster Ferry Terminal, making us the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">perfect base</a> for a stopover, as the drive from most UK locations is a long one. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Walk along Dunnet Head</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Exploring <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunnet_Head" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dunnet Head </a>is one of the most popular things to do around John O&#8217;Groats for outdoor enthusiasts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dunnet Head sits right at the very northern tip of mainland Britain, just a 30-minute drive from John O’Groats. It’s the sort of place you come to when you want total peace and quiet, away from the everyday hustle and bustle.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perched right on the edge of dramatic cliffs above the Pentland Firth, it offers incredible, wide-open views across to the Orkney Islands on a clear day. It’s wild, exposed, and extremely windy, but that&#8217;s all part of the fun.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the warmer months, you might be lucky enough to spot puffins, guillemots and razorbills nesting along the cliff tops. And if you make your way to the highest point, you’ll see the 19th-century <a href="https://dunnetheadlighthouse.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dunnet Head Lighthouse</a> perched atop.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-head-lighthouse-1024x720.jpg" alt="Dunnet Head Lighthouse." class="wp-image-4594" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-head-lighthouse-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-head-lighthouse-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-head-lighthouse-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-head-lighthouse-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Dunnet-head-lighthouse.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bringing your dog along and looking for suitable hotels near John O&#8217;Groats? The<a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/"> Ulbster Arms Hotel </a>offers <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/dog-friendly-rooms/">dog-friendly rooms,</a> so you don&#8217;t have to worry about seeking out kennels or pet sitters. Your four-legged companion is welcome to join you on those exciting outdoor adventures, after all!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit The Castle of Mey</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just a 15-minute drive from the Ulbster Hotel lies <a href="https://www.castleofmey.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Castle of Mey</a>, which was once the personal residence of HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Castle-of-Mey-1024x720.jpg" alt="Castle of Mey is located just 15 minutes from John O'Groats." class="wp-image-4595" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Castle-of-Mey-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Castle-of-Mey-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Castle-of-Mey-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Castle-of-Mey-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Castle-of-Mey.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Originally known as Barrogill Castle, the property had fallen into disrepair before Her Majesty acquired it in 1952. She undertook a long-term restoration project of the structure and its surrounding 30-acre gardens. During the process, she also reinstated its original name, “Castle of Mey”. Over the years, it became a much-loved retreat where she would return regularly until 1996.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, the castle opens to visitors on selected days between May and September. The rooms are kept much as she left them, and what often stands out most is how relaxed and personal it feels, far removed from the formal grandeur you might expect. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit John O’Groats mill</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://johnogroatsmill.com/">John O’Groats Mill</a> is the very last surviving water-powered mill of the rural Caithness life. Many visitors exploring the area from the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/">Ulbster Arms Hotel </a>often include this attraction in their wider coastal itinerary. In our opinion, it&#8217;s well worth a stop-off to get a glimpse of real working Scottish life at the turn of the century.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wheat-John-OGroats-Mill-1024x720.jpg" alt="John O'Groats mill making bread" class="wp-image-4596" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wheat-John-OGroats-Mill-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wheat-John-OGroats-Mill-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wheat-John-OGroats-Mill-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wheat-John-OGroats-Mill-600x422.jpg 600w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Wheat-John-OGroats-Mill.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Built in 1901 to replace an earlier structure, it continued operating until 2001, when the death of the last miller brought a long-standing local tradition to a close.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, it wasn’t until 2017 that the structure was preserved for future generations. This was all thanks to the creation of the John O’Groats Mill Trust. What followed was a programme of fundraising and restoration to bring the mill back to life and into full operation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reopened in 2025, the mill now welcomes visitors from around the world. Guided tours explore how it once operated, from traditional grain processing to the broader role mills of the day.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What’s the typical weather for John O&#8217;Groats?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to its position on the far northeastern tip of Scotland, the weather in John O’Groats is known to be cool and often changeable. It’s not unusual to experience a mix of conditions in a single day, from bright coastal sunshine to a passing shower or two. Plus, you’re also likely to experience blustery spells along the shoreline. So, it&#8217;s a good idea to pack a warm, waterproof layer, as the weather can shift quite quickly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not sure what to do at John O&#8217;Groats when the weather isn’t playing ball? Head back for a cosy afternoon at the<a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/"> Ulbster Arms</a>, one of the most famous hotels near John O&#8217;Groats. Inside, you’ll discover the cosy <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/drink/">Lounge Bar </a>where you can settle in with a hot drink or something stronger. Or, lose yourself in a good book in the library.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Ulbster-Arms-Hotel-Bar-1024x720.jpg" alt="The Ulbster Arms Hotel in Caithness with two people enjoying a drink" class="wp-image-967" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Ulbster-Arms-Hotel-Bar-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Ulbster-Arms-Hotel-Bar-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Ulbster-Arms-Hotel-Bar-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Ulbster-Arms-Hotel-Bar.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How many days do you need for the NC500?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The honest answer: five to seven days for a relaxed trip. Three days is possible, but you will see more windscreen than Scotland. Five days give you proper time on the north coast. Seven lets you add detours, distilleries, and a rest day. Ten days is where the route stops being a lap and becomes a holiday. Whatever you choose, plan your overnight stops before you book anything else, because accommodation in the far north is limited and fills quickly in summer.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Clockwise or anticlockwise?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most popular direction is clockwise from Inverness, heading up the east coast first. This gives you sunrise views over the North Sea early in the trip and saves the celebrated west coast sunsets for the finale. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anticlockwise works just as well if you prefer to tackle the winding western roads while you are fresh. Either way, the far north sits at the midpoint, which is exactly why it makes a natural place to stop.</p>

<a class="btn" href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">Explore Our Rooms</a>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to break your NC500 route</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most north coast 500 itineraries use two or three overnight bases. A common shape looks like this: one stop on the west coast around Ullapool or Applecross, one in Caithness for the north, and a final night on the east coast or back near Inverness. The mistake drivers most often regret is skipping the northern stop. It forces a huge driving day across the top of Scotland at exactly the point in the trip when tiredness sets in, and it rushes the quietest, most dramatic stretch of the whole route.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Suggested NC500 itineraries</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Three days:</strong>&nbsp;Inverness, Dornoch, Halkirk, Durness. Short but spectacular, taking in Highland villages, coastal cliffs and local food and drink.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Five days:</strong>&nbsp;Inverness, Wick, Halkirk, Tongue, Ullapool. More stops, scenic walks and time to relax in Caithness before heading west.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Seven-day grand tour:</strong>&nbsp;the full journey, combining castles, beaches and distilleries, with Caithness as your midpoint rest.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Caithness is the most underrated stop on the route</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many visitors focus on better-known names like Applecross or Ullapool. However, locals and experienced NC500 travellers know Caithness is one of the highlights of the entire journey. This northeastern corner offers wide open landscapes, rugged cliffs, historic castles, quiet roads and extraordinary coastal scenery, without the crowds. Unlike busier hotspots, Caithness lets you slow down: spectacular sea views, ancient ruins, hidden beaches and wildlife encounters, from seabird colonies to seals and even dolphins along the coast.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What to see from your Caithness stopover</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No NC500 trip is complete without John O&#8217;Groats and the Pentland Firth views, and from a Halkirk base it is an easy 45-minute drive. Nearby, Duncansby Head and its famous sea stacks offer one of the most scenic viewpoints in northern Scotland. History lovers can take in the clifftop ruins of the Castle of Old Wick and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle, while the Castle of Mey adds a royal chapter. Keen walkers can climb Morven, the highest peak in Caithness, or pick from beautiful beach and coastal hikes at every ability level. And for whisky lovers, several Highland distilleries sit within driving distance.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Extending your trip to Orkney Islands</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many travellers extend their North Coast 500 route with a visit to the Orkney Islands, and Caithness is the natural launch point. Ferries run from Scrabster, near Thurso, and from John O&#8217;Groats in the warmer months for foot passengers. An overnight stop nearby lets you rest properly before an early crossing. For crossing times, routes and practical tips, read our full&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/ferries-to-orkney-islands/">guide to the Orkney ferries</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Travel tips for the NC500</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wick and Thurso are your best fuel stops before the remote stretches. Expect single-track sections, so take your time and use the passing places with a wave. Weather changes fast, so pack layers and waterproofs whatever the season. Finally, download offline maps and bring snacks, because signal dips on the emptiest and most beautiful stretches.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why the North Highlands Are Magical When the Temperature Drops</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scotland in winter feels like a different world. Snow-topped mountains, quiet roads, and dramatic coastlines take centre stage as the summer crowds disappear. And if you’re planning a winter break in Scotland, the North Highlands should be high on your list. Specifically, a top place to visit is around Caithness, where peaceful landscapes and crisp winter skies create an unforgettable Scottish experience.</p>

<a class="btn" href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&#038;adults=1&#038;_gl=1*50n5y3*_gcl_au*OTU3NDA0MDEwLjE3NzYzNDgyNTg.*_ga*MjI4OTIxNzg2LjE3MjgzMDQzMjE.*_ga_FVTZRRGRDS*czE3Nzg2MDMxOTgkbzE4MCRnMSR0MTc3ODYwMzI4NCRqMzUkbDAkaDU5NDE4Mzk3NyRkeVFaUlA0TGJGSUVSMEtONW5Wb0NqU2I3S0p1bm9GNm5hdw..">Check Dates &#038; Rates</a>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What winter in Scotland looks and feels like</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite the dramatic scenery, winter temperatures in Scotland aren’t always as extreme as you might expect. Around Caithness and Sutherland, daytime temperatures tend to hover between 1°C and 7°C. This means frosty mornings and clear, cold nights are common, but heavy snow is less frequent along the coast. As a result, you can explore comfortably without the weather closing everything down, as long as you wrap up warm.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Snow-Capped-Mountains-and-Stag-1024x720.jpg" alt="Snow capped mountains in Scotland with a stag in the foreground" class="wp-image-928" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Snow-Capped-Mountains-and-Stag-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Snow-Capped-Mountains-and-Stag-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Snow-Capped-Mountains-and-Stag-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Snow-Capped-Mountains-and-Stag.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And with winter being the quietest season for tourism, the roads are open, the beaches are empty, and the scenery is all yours to enjoy. You don’t have to rush. You don’t have to queue. Instead, you can enjoy peaceful views, relaxed days out, and some of the most dramatic skies you’ll ever see in Scotland.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Places to visit in Scotland in winter </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The North Highlands offer some of the best places to visit in Scotland in winter. Around Halkirk, Thurso, and the Caithness coastline, you’ll find dramatic cliff walks, unique beaches, historic ruins, and wildlife watching opportunities aplenty.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some top winter attractions in the area include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Dunnet Head</strong> – The most northerly point of mainland Britain. Wild seas, incredible sunsets, and a chance of spotting orcas offshore. There&#8217;s also <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/dunnet-forest/">Dunnet Forest</a>, with countless walks all around.</li>

<li><strong>Castle Sinclair Girnigoe</strong> – A spectacular cliff-edge ruin near <a href="https://www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/wick-p236221">Wick</a>, with winter waves crashing below.</li>

<li><strong>Forss Waterfall</strong> – One of the hidden gems of <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">Caithness</a>, especially after rainfall.</li>

<li><strong><a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/john-ogroats-trail/">John O’Groats</a> &amp; <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/duncansby-head-and-stacks/">Duncansby Head</a></strong> – Walk along the cliffs to see the famous sea stacks, seabirds, and dramatic winter coastlines.</li>

<li><strong>Wolfburn Distillery, Thurso</strong> – Warm up with a whisky tasting and tour.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you’re lucky, winter might also bring the Northern Lights, which can often be seen across Caithness when you&#8217;re out <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/stargazing/">stargazing</a>.</p>

<a class="btn" href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&#038;adults=1&#038;_gl=1em50n5y3/em_gcl_auemOTU3NDA0MDEwLjE3NzYzNDgyNTg./em_gaemMjI4OTIxNzg2LjE3MjgzMDQzMjE./em_ga_FVTZRRGRDS*czE3Nzg2MDMxOTgkbzE4MCRnMSR0MTc3ODYwMzI4NCRqMzUkbDAkaDU5NDE4Mzk3NyRkeVFaUlA0TGJGSUVSMEtONW5Wb0NqU2I3S0p1bm9GNm5hdw..">Check Dates &amp; Rates</a>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why winter is perfect for exploring the Highlands</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the benefits of visiting Scotland in <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/category/winter/">winter</a> is the atmosphere. The light is softer, the landscapes feel wilder, and there’s a calm that you rarely experience during summer. Even familiar places feel different in winter. <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/old-keiss-castle/">Castles like Old Keiss</a> seem more dramatic, beaches are untouched, and woodland paths take on a magical stillness.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ll also find shorter daylight hours encourage slower travel. Long lunches, relaxed evenings, and early nights beside the fire become part of the experience. And rather than trying to fit in everything at once, winter invites you to take your time and enjoy the moment.</p>

<a class="btn" href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&#038;adults=1&#038;_gl=1em50n5y3/em_gcl_auemOTU3NDA0MDEwLjE3NzYzNDgyNTg./em_gaemMjI4OTIxNzg2LjE3MjgzMDQzMjE./em_ga_FVTZRRGRDS*czE3Nzg2MDMxOTgkbzE4MCRnMSR0MTc3ODYwMzI4NCRqMzUkbDAkaDU5NDE4Mzk3NyRkeVFaUlA0TGJGSUVSMEtONW5Wb0NqU2I3S0p1bm9GNm5hdw..">Check Dates &amp; Rates</a>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Thinking about camping in Scottish winter? </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Camping in Scotland in winter might sound adventurous, but the reality can be… less than romantic.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cold ground, unpredictable weather, short daylight hours, and frozen tents can turn a “back-to-nature getaway” into a long night of shivering and wishing you’d booked somewhere warm. Even experienced campers often avoid Scottish winter camping unless they have specialist gear and are prepared for freezing temperatures at night.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">cosy four-star hotel</a> is simply a better choice, and much more enjoyable. Instead of struggling with frozen tent pegs or waking up damp, you can relax in a warm room, enjoy hot meals, have a proper bathroom, and sleep in comfort. You still get the beauty of the Scottish winter landscape, just without the discomfort. It&#8217;s a win/win.</p>

</figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Winter wildlife and starry skies</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Winter is one of the best times to spot wildlife in the Highlands. Caithness has red deer, seals, seabirds, and sometimes orcas passing along the coast. And because the skies are so dark, <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/stargazing/">stargazing</a> is a great way to spend the night. It’s not unusual to see the Milky Way, shooting stars, and constellations with the naked eye.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many visitors also come to Caithness for astronomy photography, too. Wide open views, no light pollution, and long clear nights create ideal stargazing conditions.</p>

<a class="btn" href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&#038;adults=1&#038;_gl=1em50n5y3/em_gcl_auemOTU3NDA0MDEwLjE3NzYzNDgyNTg./em_gaemMjI4OTIxNzg2LjE3MjgzMDQzMjE./em_ga_FVTZRRGRDS*czE3Nzg2MDMxOTgkbzE4MCRnMSR0MTc3ODYwMzI4NCRqMzUkbDAkaDU5NDE4Mzk3NyRkeVFaUlA0TGJGSUVSMEtONW5Wb0NqU2I3S0p1bm9GNm5hdw..">Check Dates &amp; Rates</a>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Walking in Scotland in winter</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the best things about winter in Scotland is the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/">walking and hiking</a>. Coastal paths are quiet, woodlands feel atmospheric, and the soft winter light makes every view feel cinematic. Around Halkirk and the <a href="https://theflowcountry.org.uk/">Flow Country</a>, you’ll find lots of peaceful trails where the only sounds are wind, water, and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/blog/birdwatching-scotland/">birdlife</a>. Just make sure to bring proper layers and footwear, as paths can be frosty or muddy.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="480" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Family-Walk-1024x480.jpg" alt="Mum and two children on an autumn walk" class="wp-image-1667" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Family-Walk-1024x480.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Family-Walk-300x141.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Family-Walk-768x360.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Family-Walk-1536x720.jpg 1536w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Family-Walk-2048x960.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you prefer beach walks, Dunnet Beach and Sandside Bay are beautiful in winter. You might see surfers, seals, or simply miles of golden sand without another footprint in sight.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Warm up with Highland food and whisky</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Winter in Scotland is also about <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/food-drink/">food</a>. Hearty Highland dishes, fresh seafood, local whisky, and warming desserts all taste even better when it’s cold outside. Visitors often combine a day <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/">outdoors</a> with an evening meal beside the fire. And whether you’re enjoying traditional haggis, homemade soup, or seafood from the northern waters, winter here brings food to life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you’re a whisky fan, a tour of Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso makes the perfect winter afternoon.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to stay in Scotland in the colder months</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plan your winter break in Scotland the cosy way. Stay at Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk and enjoy:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Warm rooms and modern comforts</li>

<li>A welcoming bar and restaurant with hearty Highland food</li>

<li>The perfect location for exploring Thurso, Wick, Dunnet Head, John O’Groats, and the Caithness coastline</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A perfect winter break in Scotland starts here</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re looking for places to go in Scotland in winter, the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk is the ideal base for exploring the <a href="https://www.nordicvisitor.com/scotland/attractions/northern-highlands/">North Highlands</a>. It’s four-star in every way and perfectly located for day trips across Caithness and Sutherland. And whether you&#8217;re walking, sightseeing, whisky tasting, or chasing the Northern Lights, you’ll be returning to a comfortable room, great food, and a roaring fire.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So instead of freezing in a tent, make winter in Scotland something to look forward to. Book your stay at Ulbster Arms Hotel and discover the magic of the North Highlands in complete comfort.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What makes a hotel 4-star? It’s a common question, and one we’re very much suited to answer given our status as a luxury hotel. So, let’s find out the answer and why the Ulbster Arms meets this strict benchmark as one of the top 4-star hotels in Thurso.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Accommodation Standards</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The standard of your <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">rooms</a> is of huge importance for achieving a 4-star hotel classification. They should be spacious and comfortable, with luxury touches along the way. We offer all of this and more, with every detail designed around providing the very best guest experience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You also want to have a variety of options with 4-star hotel facilities, with different rooms for different purposes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Ulbster House, we have <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/standard-rooms/">en-suite standard bedrooms</a> and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/premium-rooms/">premium en-suite rooms</a> in the main part of the hotel. We also boast <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/executive-rooms/">executive, modern rooms</a> in our contemporary wing, and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/dog-friendly-rooms/">dog-friendly</a> and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/family-rooms/">family rooms</a> overlooking the river.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dining and Hospitality</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/">Eating and drinking</a> play a huge role in hotel classification. So, a 4-star hotel <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/current-menu/">food menu</a> has to be up there with the best of them. A key requirement is that the finest ingredients are used for meal preparation, and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/drink/">top-quality beverages</a> are available. They should also be served with care and professionalism in a 4-star rated establishment.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Food-and-Drink-1024x720.jpg" alt="The lounge bar at the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Caithness" class="wp-image-451" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Food-and-Drink-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Food-and-Drink-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Food-and-Drink-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Food-and-Drink.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ulbster Arms restaurant and bars are luxury encapsulated, with a menu utilising locally sourced Scottish ingredients. Everything is prepared by proud local chefs who want to show off the best the country has to offer. This ranges from dishes for every palette, from hearty Scottish breakfasts to evening meals, lunches, and more.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s why our <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/eat/">dining experience</a> is so highly rated, and one of the core reasons we’ve achieved our 4-star hotel classification. We also have <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/functions/">function rooms</a> available, and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/food-and-drink-experiences/">food and drink experiences</a> including whisky flights, themed tasting menus, and more.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Guest Services and Facilities</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Any 4-star hotel standards require extra special facilities going beyond the bedroom. These include free Wi-Fi as a minimum, as well as <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/sustainability/ev-chargers/#:~:text=Our%20hotel%20offers%20three%20car,walk%20from%20the%20hotel%20entrance.">EV charging points</a> and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/dog-friendly-rooms/">dog-friendly accommodation</a> options.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spaces for celebrations and private dining are also necessary, each of which we provide at the Ulbster Arms Hotel. Why? Because they elevate a stay to extraordinary, which is precisely what’s required from a 4-star classification.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cleanliness and Housekeeping Standards</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A clean, well-maintained property is crucial for any hotel, but at the 4-star level, the bar is in the clouds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At The Ulbster Arms, our housekeeping team guarantees our hotel is consistently clean, with attention to detail for extra luxury. We also balance the history of our building with modern refurbishments to deliver the highest standards and experience for our guests.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Location and Experience</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A 4-star hotel should ideally be in a fantastic location with <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/">lots of things to do</a> in the area.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="480" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Fishing-River-Thurso-3-1024x480.jpg" alt="Sunset on the bridgepool of River Thurso" class="wp-image-1884" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Fishing-River-Thurso-3-1024x480.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Fishing-River-Thurso-3-300x141.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Fishing-River-Thurso-3-768x360.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Fishing-River-Thurso-3-1536x720.jpg 1536w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Fishing-River-Thurso-3-2048x960.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Ulbster Arms, our grounds are nestled on the banks of the River Thurso, with simple access to the Northern Highlands. As you probably expect, <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/">outdoor activities</a> are plentiful in this beautiful part of the world, such as golf opportunities, coastal tours, and more. Ulbster Arms also offers a great base to explore the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do">North Coast 500 (NC500)</a>, offering a spot of luxury on your road trip journey.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Recognition and Awards</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our words are all well and good, but independent recognition matters when it comes to 4-star classification. With awards generally given for consistency and devotion to excellence, The Ulbster Arms received the <a href="https://invernessthingstodo.com/where-to-stay/ulbster-arms-hotel/">Gold Medal for Hospitality</a> and the <a href="https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/travel/14041827/nc500-ulbster-caithness-staycation-holidays-hotels-scotland/">Hotel of the Year for Romantic Breaks in 2023</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At The Ulbster Arms Hotel, our 4-star rating reflects what we stand for. From the comfort of our rooms to the quality of the food we prepare and serve, not to mention the warmth of our service and the care we put into every single stay. Everything is encapsulated in our 4-star hotel rating, and we’re proudly one of the top hotels in Thurso.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, if you’re travelling through Caithness, planning a <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/salmon-fishing/">fishing trip</a>, or facing the NC500, join us for an unforgettable stay.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking for the best hotel in Thurso, by John o&#8217; Groats?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you think of epic journeys, one that may come to mind is John O’Groats to Lands&#8217; End (or vice-versa) on the North Coast 500. Travelling the entire length of Great Britain is a challenge that many people take up, often for charity. But where did this challenge come from and what exactly does it entail? And if you are looking for the best hotels to rest up in Caithness, the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> is the ideal luxury but affordable <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">hotel accommodation</a>. And we have one of the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/">best restaurants in Caithness</a> for you to fuel up for your adventure holidays in Scotland!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The history of the challenge</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first recorded walk from John O&#8217;Groats in the far north of Scotland to Lands&#8217; End in the far south of England came in 1871. Two brothers, John and Robert Naylor, walked the end-to-end journey. They made notes along the way and finally, 45 years later, <a href="https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/usebooks/naylor-johnogroats/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a book</a> chronicling their travels was published. In 1960, the engineer and long-distance walker Dr Barbara Moore completed the walk in 23 days, gaining much publicity. And from this point, the popularity of the challenge really took off. Especially with increased interest in adventure holidays in the UK. People were traversing the John O’Groats to Lands&#8217; End challenge on foot, on bike, or even on horse! And our wee Scottish hotel is the ideal place to start or finish your journey! With some of the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/">best food on the NC500</a> and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">best luxury hotel rooms</a> in Thurso and Caithness. Plus, if you book direct with us, we will give you <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/highland-hotel-deals/book-direct/">10% off</a>. See our list of <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/highland-hotel-deals/">hotel offers </a>in Scotland!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Are you are partaking the John O’Groats to Lands&#8217; End challenge to raise money or awareness for a charity? Or simply looking for UK adventure holidays for the challenge of it? We are here to give you a helping hand. To this day, the journey between John O&#8217;Groats and Lands&#8217; End remains popular. Did you know <a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2019/10/lands-end-to-john-o-groats-record-breaking-journeys-by-foot-bike-and-even-law-594299" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">several world records</a> have been set over the years, travelling by various methods &#8211; including by lawnmower! And we are more than happy for you to bring your favourite travelling companion! Join us at our luxury Thurso and Caithness hotel, <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/blog/best-hotel-thurso/">find out why we are the best</a>! We are a short 35 minute drive from the start of the trail. But our friendly team can organise transportation for you to begin your journey. Whilst we are a short distance away, we are one of the best hotels in Thurso and Caithness&#8230; So, we are well worth the distance.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.mackayshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/LEJOG-Medal.jpg" alt="A medal engraved with LEJOG 2013" class="wp-image-6462"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Lands&#8217; End John O&#8217;Groats is sometimes abbreviated to &#8220;LEJOG&#8221;</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The LEJOG journey</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This amazing Scottish adventure holiday takes you between the top (John O&#8217;Groats) and the bottom (Lands&#8217; End) of Great Britain, in either direction. It is 874 miles in total, travelling by road, and it takes around 14 days on foot. However, there is a world record for someone running it <a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/fastest-journey-from-john-o-groats-to-lands-end-on-foot-(male)" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in just 9 days</a>! After this you will definitely need a <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/">luxury hotel near John o&#8217; Groats</a> in Thurso, for some R&amp;R! Our friendly Highland team are here to help. Plus, we can tell you some exciting things to do in Caithness. So, you can finish off your trip to Scotland with some Highland culture and history.</p>

However, this ups the mileage and can take months rather than weeks. There are <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1871890594" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">guidebooks</a> available to help you plan a route. For cycling holidays in Scotland, using the National Cycle Network, the distance is 1189 miles and can be split into <a href="https://www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network/lands-end-to-john-ogroats-lejog" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">5 sections</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A</strong>nd whilst staying with us in the very best of Thurso and Caithness hotels, you can visit Dunnet heath. John O&#8217;Groats isn&#8217;t actually the most northerly point in Great Britain! So, you definitely want to make claim and head from our doors a wee bit further up to the dramatic Dunnet Head. And Lands&#8217; End isn&#8217;t the most southerly, That&#8217;s <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lizard-point" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Lizard</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://www.mackayshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-1024x576.jpg" alt="Dunnet Head Lighthouse" class="wp-image-6444"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Dunnet Head is actually the most northerly point in Great Britain. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 Accommodation and Highlights: Best Places to Stay and Things to do on the North Coast 500</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Planning your NC500 accommodation is one of the most important decisions to make before setting off. The route covers 516 miles of northern Scotland, taking you from Inverness up the east coast, across Caithness, and back down the northwest. And despite the massive coverage, the best stops book out months in advance. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The northern section, in particular, fills faster than anywhere else on the route. However, the Ulbster Arms Hotel, based in Halkirk, Caithness, welcomes NC500 travellers every year. And whether you&#8217;re planning a three-day dash or a full week on the road, we&#8217;ve got you covered with <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">comfortable rooms</a> and fantastic access to some of the NC500 route highlights.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this guide, we&#8217;ll explore some of the best places to stay on the North Coast 500. We&#8217;ll also tell you what to expect along the way, and some of the best experiences to enjoy on the most northern stretch.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&amp;adults=1">Check availability at Ulbster Arms Hotel</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 accommodation by section: planning your overnight stops</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The North Coast 500 splits into natural sections, and each one has a different accommodation landscape. Before you book anything, it helps to know what you&#8217;re dealing with on each stretch.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">From Inverness into the North of Scotland</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Inverness is the starting point and easily the most straightforward section to book. This is thanks to a wide range of hotels, guesthouses, and city centre options to choose from. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moving north, the east coast leg through Dornoch, Golspie, and Helmsdale has a solid mix of smaller hotels and B&amp;Bs. Availability here is reasonable, though it fills up quickly in peak months. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The northern stretch of the NC500</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even further north, the Caithness section is where NC500 accommodation becomes most competitive. Four-star hotel options are super limited, so early booking is essential. This is largely because Caithness is the northernmost section of the NC500, running from Dunbeath on the east coast across to Dounreay on the north coast. It&#8217;s also one of the most rewarding stretches of the entire journey.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For travellers looking for hotel accommodation on the NC500 northern section, the Ulbster Arms Hotel is the standout four-star option. We&#8217;re based in Halkirk, sitting neatly between Thurso and Wick. As a result, you are within easy reach of every major Caithness attraction. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We&#8217;re also the closest four-star hotel to the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/ferries-to-orkney-islands/" type="page" id="4444">Scrabster ferry terminal</a>, which is crucial if an Orkney detour is on your list, as it&#8217;s the fastest and most convenient crossing point.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Heading west</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further west, the northwest coast from Durness down to Ullapool is popular with glampers and self-catering travellers. And finally, the west coast back to Inverness offers a mix of lodges, inns, and smaller hotels throughout.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Executive-Room-1-1024x720.jpg" alt="Executive room in the Ulbster building" class="wp-image-1328" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Executive-Room-1-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Executive-Room-1-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Executive-Room-1-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Executive-Room-1.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Stay in a spacious, comfortable hotel room at the Ulbster Arms in Caithness</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Staying at Ulbster Arms: NC500 hotels in Caithness</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ulbster Arms Hotel is a 19th-century Highland hotel on the banks of the River Thurso in Halkirk, Caithness. We offer a range of <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">hotel rooms</a> , including standard, premium, executive, and <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/family-rooms/">family rooms</a>, as well as <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/dog-friendly-rooms/">dog-friendly accommodation</a>. We also have private on-site parking, which is free for all guests.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a long day on the road, our <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/eat-drink/">restaurant and bar</a> serve locally sourced food daily. We also have a library, lounge, and outdoor garden for when you want to properly unwind. On top of this, we have six <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/sustainability/ev-chargers/" type="page" id="1906">EV charging points</a>, with three of the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/blog/exploring-highlands-by-ev/" type="post" id="1925">fastest in the Highlands</a>. So, if you&#8217;re driving the NC500 in an electric vehicle, you&#8217;re in good hands at the Ulbster Arms Hotel.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&amp;adults=1">View room availability and book direct</a></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-1024x720.jpg" alt="Dunnet Head Lighthouse aerial view - North Coast 500" class="wp-image-552" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Dunnet-Head.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Take in spectacular scenery on your NC500 journey</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 highlights: what to do in Caithness</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Staying at the Ulbster Arms Hotel puts you within easy reach of the best stops on the northern section of the North Coast 500. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, here&#8217;s what to plan into your NC500 itinerary from your base in Halkirk:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">John O&#8217;Groats and Duncansby Head</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/john-ogroats-trail/" type="page" id="2206">John O&#8217;Groats</a> needs little introduction. It&#8217;s the most northerly inhabited point on the mainland, and the famous signpost marking 874 miles to Land&#8217;s End is one of the most photographed spots on the entire NC500. However, don&#8217;t just stop there. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because a short drive east brings you to <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/duncansby-head-and-stacks/" type="page" id="2187">Duncansby Head</a>, where the Duncansby Stacks rise 60 metres out of the sea just offshore. The coastal walk from the lighthouse to the stacks takes around 30 minutes each way and is absolutely spectacular.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Castle of Mey</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Castle of Mey is the only Scottish castle purchased and privately restored by a member of the British royal family. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother bought it in 1952 and spent years bringing it back to life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It opens to visitors between May and September and sits on the Pentland Firth coast, just 20 minutes from Ulbster Arms.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 golf courses near Caithness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/outdoor-adventures/golfing/" type="page" id="737">golfers</a>, Thurso Golf Club is one of the most northerly 18-hole courses on mainland Britain. The parkland course runs alongside the River Thurso, and on a clear day, you can see across to Orkney from the fairways. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ulbster Arms sponsors a hole at Thurso Golf Club, so ask at reception about guest passes during your stay.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Whisky distilleries on the NC500</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are three whisky distilleries within easy reach of Ulbster Arms, which is very good news indeed. <a href="https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&amp;pf=1&amp;ai=DChsSEwiM5aHGlfCUAxWBR0ECHfLACiEYACICCAEQABoCd3M&amp;co=1&amp;ase=2&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw54nRBhDCARIsAMcY_SAWqVFhZN0YjB5LynMfIV10ECYU_om3J6TwJvnENOMBzJW-a-_02R4aAikDEALw_wcB&amp;cce=2&amp;category=acrcp_v1_32&amp;sig=AOD64_2M7V1H26dyOBa_csslc9v_6iTOug&amp;q&amp;nis=4&amp;adurl=https://wolfburn.com/pages/tours?gad_source%3D1%26gad_campaignid%3D21480353002%26gbraid%3D0AAAAACLRp_wz3KaZ54tndFUBP_sF7I9zo%26gclid%3DCj0KCQjw54nRBhDCARIsAMcY_SAWqVFhZN0YjB5LynMfIV10ECYU_om3J6TwJvnENOMBzJW-a-_02R4aAikDEALw_wcB&amp;ved=2ahUKEwir15nGlfCUAxWbVKQEHbc6LI8Q0Qx6BAgTEAQ" type="link" id="https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&amp;pf=1&amp;ai=DChsSEwiM5aHGlfCUAxWBR0ECHfLACiEYACICCAEQABoCd3M&amp;co=1&amp;ase=2&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw54nRBhDCARIsAMcY_SAWqVFhZN0YjB5LynMfIV10ECYU_om3J6TwJvnENOMBzJW-a-_02R4aAikDEALw_wcB&amp;cce=2&amp;category=acrcp_v1_32&amp;sig=AOD64_2M7V1H26dyOBa_csslc9v_6iTOug&amp;q&amp;nis=4&amp;adurl=https://wolfburn.com/pages/tours?gad_source%3D1%26gad_campaignid%3D21480353002%26gbraid%3D0AAAAACLRp_wz3KaZ54tndFUBP_sF7I9zo%26gclid%3DCj0KCQjw54nRBhDCARIsAMcY_SAWqVFhZN0YjB5LynMfIV10ECYU_om3J6TwJvnENOMBzJW-a-_02R4aAikDEALw_wcB&amp;ved=2ahUKEwir15nGlfCUAxWbVKQEHbc6LI8Q0Qx6BAgTEAQ" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wolfburn Distillery</a> in Thurso produces single malt Scotch whisky using water from the Wolf Burn stream. Originally established in 1821, it was revived in 2013 and has been going strong ever since. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, <a href="http://www.dunnetbaydistillers.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dunnet Bay Distillers</a> near Thurso produces Rock Rose Gin, Holy Grass Vodka, and Mapmaker&#8217;s Rum, with a visitor centre and tours available. And finally, <a href="http://www.northpointdistillery.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Point Distillery</a> in Forss rounds things off with award-winning rum and gin. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if beer is more your thing, <a href="https://www.johnogroatsbrewery.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">John O&#8217;Groats Brewery</a> has a tasting room serving craft ales and stouts.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dunnet Head</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunnet_Head">Dunnet Head</a> is the most northerly point on the British mainland, which surprises a lot of people who assume that title belongs to John O&#8217;Groats. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dunnet Head sits on a 300-foot cliff above the Pentland Firth, and Dunnet Head Lighthouse has stood here since 1830. The headland is an RSPB nature reserve, home to breeding puffins, fulmars, and great skuas. It is a 35-minute drive from Ulbster Arms and well worth every minute. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/walking-hiking/dunnet-forest/" type="page" id="1866" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dunnet Forest</a> is also fantastic for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts on the NC500.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dunnet-lighthouse-1024x720.jpg" alt="Dunnet lighthouse in the north of Scotland with a blue sky." class="wp-image-1550" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dunnet-lighthouse-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dunnet-lighthouse-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dunnet-lighthouse-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/dunnet-lighthouse.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Dunnet Head Lighthouse is the most northerly on the mainland</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Orkney ferry from Scrabster</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">NorthLink Ferries run a regular <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/ferries-to-orkney-islands/" type="page" id="4444">ferry service from Scrabster to Stromness</a> in Orkney, with a crossing time of approximately 90 minutes. Scrabster is just a 15-minute drive from Ulbster Arms, and many NC500 travellers add a night or two in Orkney to their itinerary. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Skara Brae alone is worth the trip, a Neolithic settlement older than the Egyptian pyramids and one of the most significant archaeological sites in Western Europe.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Scrabster-1024x720.jpg" alt="Scrabster on a stormy day with crashing waves." class="wp-image-1551" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Scrabster-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Scrabster-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Scrabster-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Scrabster.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Regular ferries leave from Scrabster for the Orkney Isles</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 accommodation guide: tips for booking places to stay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you finalise your NC500 accommodation, here are a few things worth knowing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, book as early as you possibly can. Peak season runs from May to September, and four-star NC500 hotels on the northern section fill up fast. Second, always book direct where possible. At Ulbster Arms, <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/highland-hotel-deals/book-direct/">booking direct saves you 10%</a> on your stay. Third, plan overnight stops around actual driving time rather than distance. Single-track roads take much longer than a map suggests. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, if you are travelling with a dog, check pet policies before booking. At Ulbster Arms, dogs are welcome in our <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/dog-friendly-rooms/">dog-friendly rooms</a> throughout the hotel.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Book your NC500 accommodation at Ulbster Arms Hotel</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ulbster Arms Hotel is the leading four-star NC500 accommodation option on the northern section of the North Coast 500. We&#8217;re set in Halkirk, Caithness, close to Thurso, Wick, John O&#8217;Groats, and the Scrabster ferry to Orkney. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">hotel rooms</a> also suit solo travellers, couples, families, and groups. What&#8217;s more, we&#8217;re dog-friendly, EV-friendly, and open year-round. All of this makes the Ulbster Arms Hotel the perfect NC500 hotel for the northern stretch.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take a look at our <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/highland-hotel-deals/">current offers</a> and <a href="https://booking.eu.guestline.app/ULBARMS/availability?hotel=ULBSTER&amp;adults=1">book your stay today</a>. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 Itinerary: Your 3, 5 and 7-Day North Coast 500 Route Planner</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/north-coast-500/" type="page" id="331">North Coast 500</a> covers 516 miles of northern Scotland. It starts and ends in Inverness, taking you up the east coast, across the dramatic north, and back down the west. How long you take shapes everything about the experience. A 3-day NC500 itinerary is a focused northern loop, for example, while five days gives you breathing room. Seven days, on the other hand, lets you stop more and take more in. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Below, we&#8217;ve mapped out all three options so you can plan your Scotland trip itinerary properly before you leave. And we&#8217;re well-positioned to offer NC500 advice, because here at the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk, Caithness, we sit right in the middle of the NC500&#8217;s northern section. So, we know a thing or two about the route and know how to make the most of it.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How long does it take to drive the North Coast 500? NC500 Itinerary</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The NC500 route is 516 miles in total, and technically, you could drive it in two days. However, if you ask anybody who&#8217;s taken the drip, they&#8217;ll tell you that you really should spend more time. This is largely because the roads are single-track in many places, and the scenery demands regular stops. There&#8217;s also so much to see, that you&#8217;d be better of planning in more time than you might first thing.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-NC500-1024x720.jpg" alt="The North Coast 500 in Scotland" class="wp-image-902" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-NC500-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-NC500-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-NC500-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-NC500.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a result, most travellers allow five to seven days. Ten days is also possible if you want to explore even more deeply, but the core experiences are comfortably covered in seven.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best time to drive the NC500 is May to September. Why? Because days are long, most attractions are open, and the weather is at its most cooperative. And as you might expect, July and August are the busiest months. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 3-day itinerary: the northern highlights loop</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Three days on the NC500 works best as a focused northern loop rather than an attempt at the full route. This covers the most dramatic stretch of the journey without feeling rushed.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 1: Inverness to Caithness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drive north from Inverness up the east coast. Key stops include Dunrobin Castle near Golspie, the clifftop ruins at Dunbeath, and the remarkable Whaligoe Steps near Ulbster, where 365 steps descend to a natural harbour. Allow around three hours of driving with stops, and arrive in <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">Caithness</a> in the afternoon. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 2: Caithness exploration day</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> as your base and spend the day covering the northern highlights. Dunnet Head is the most northerly point on the British mainland, for example, while John O&#8217;Groats and Duncansby Head are a short drive east. What&#8217;s more, the Duncansby Stacks offer some of the best coastal scenery on the entire route. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Duncansby-Stacks-1024x720.jpg" alt="Dramatic sea stacks at Duncansby Head" class="wp-image-1968" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Duncansby-Stacks-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Duncansby-Stacks-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Duncansby-Stacks-768x540.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Duncansby-Stacks.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, Castle of Mey, the late Queen Mother&#8217;s private residence, is open May to September. Wick Harbour is also worth an hour in the afternoon. Finally, you can return to Ulbster Arms for the night before tackling day three of your NC500 itinerary. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 3: Caithness to Durness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After waking up and having your fill of a beautiful Scottish breakfast, head west along the north coast. This stretch passes through Thurso, Melvich, Bettyhill, and Tongue, and the Kyle of Tongue causeway offers one of the most photographed views on the NC500 west coast section. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, end the day at Durness, where Smoo Cave sits dramatically at the base of limestone cliffs. From here, most travellers either loop back to Inverness via the A838 and A9 or continue south down the northwest coast.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 5-day itinerary: room to breathe</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Five days on the NC500 is the most popular choice for most travellers. Why? Because it covers the full route comfortably and gives you more time to enjoy more of this beautiful country.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 1: Inverness to Dornoch or Golspie</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An easier first day starts at Inverness Cathedral and the Victorian Market, which are worth an hour before you leave. Then, drive north to Dornoch or Golspie, stopping at Dunrobin Castle. The East Coast here is gentler and more accessible than what comes later. It&#8217;s therefore a good way to ease into the NC500 route.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 2: Golspie to Caithness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On your second day, head north through Helmsdale and Dunbeath. And be sure to stop at Whaligoe Steps. Arrive in Caithness by early afternoon, leaving time to explore Wick before dinner. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 3: Caithness exploration day</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 3 of your NC500 itinerary is best spent covering the northern highlights: Dunnet Head, John O&#8217;Groats, Duncansby Head, and the Castle of Mey. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="480" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Castle-Of-Mey-1024x480.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2445" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Castle-Of-Mey-1024x480.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Castle-Of-Mey-300x141.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Castle-Of-Mey-768x360.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Castle-Of-Mey-1536x720.jpg 1536w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Castle-Of-Mey-2048x960.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With five days, you also have time to visit one of the local distilleries or catch the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/things-to-do/ferries-to-orkney-islands/" type="page" id="4444">ferry from Scrabster to Orkney</a> for a few hours. Of course, it&#8217;s recommended that you spend these two nights at the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> in Caithness. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 4: Caithness to Durness or Tongue</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wake up and head west along the NC500 north coast. Stop at Thurso, drive through Bettyhill, and take time at the Kyle of Tongue. With this extra day, you can slow this stretch right down. Smoo Cave at Durness is a highlight, and we&#8217;d recommend an overnight stay in Durness or Tongue.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 5: Durness to Inverness via Ullapool</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The northwest coast section runs south from Durness through some of the most remote scenery in Scotland. Handa Island, Assynt, and Loch Assynt are all on this stretch. And Ullapool makes a natural lunch stop. From there, the drive back to Inverness takes around an hour and a half.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 7-day itinerary: the full experience</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Seven days is the NC500 route at its best. You have time to stop when something catches your eye, take longer walks, and genuinely explore rather than tick off landmarks. This is the version most people remember for the rest of their lives, and it&#8217;s what we&#8217;d recommend at the Ulbster Arms Hotel.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 1: Inverness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spend the first day of your NC500 7-day itinerary in Inverness. From here, Inverness Castle, the Victorian Market, and a visit to Loch Ness to the south are all worth your time. A relaxed start makes the days that follow feel less rushed.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 2: Inverness to Dornoch</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drive north to Dornoch, one of the most underrated towns in Scotland. The medieval cathedral, the championship golf links, and the beaches here deserve more than a passing stop. Overnight in Dornoch.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 3: Dornoch to Caithness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">North through Golspie, stopping at Dunrobin Castle, then continue through Helmsdale and Dunbeath. Stop at Whaligoe Steps. Arrive in Caithness in the afternoon and overnight at <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/">Ulbster Arms Hotel</a> in Halkirk.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 4: Caithness exploration day</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A full day in Caithness includes Dunnet Head, John O&#8217;Groats, Duncansby Head, Castle of Mey, and Wick. And in seven days, you can move slowly and take the coastal walks properly. Consider an evening at one of the local distilleries, too, and spend a second night at Ulbster Arms for true Highland hospitality. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="480" src="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-Winter-1024x480.jpg" alt="A dramatic drone shot of Dunnet Head Lighthouse in winter." class="wp-image-3342" srcset="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-Winter-1024x480.jpg 1024w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-Winter-300x141.jpg 300w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-Winter-768x360.jpg 768w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-Winter-1536x720.jpg 1536w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-Winter-2048x960.jpg 2048w, https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Dunnet-Head-Lighthouse-Winter-600x281.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also have three of the <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/sustainability/ev-chargers/" type="page" id="1906">fastest EV chargers in the Highlands</a>, and offer <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/dog-friendly-rooms/" type="page" id="1370">dog-friendly accommodation</a> for your four-legged friends.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 5: Caithness to Durness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On day five, head west along the north coast. Take the Kyle of Tongue causeway slowly, and stop at Smoo Cave before spending a night in Durness or Tongue. This is one of the most remote days on the route, so plan fuel stops in Thurso before you leave.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 6: Durness to Ullapool via Assynt</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The northwest coast on a good day is extraordinary. Handa Island, Loch Assynt, Ardvreck Castle, and Inverpolly are all on this stretch, and Ullapool is a natural overnight stop with good restaurants and harbour town atmosphere.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Day 7: Ullapool to Inverness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The final leg runs south through Garve and back into Inverness. This is the shortest driving day of the trip, so take it slowly. Stop at Corrieshalloch Gorge near Braemore Junction, one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Highlands, and arrive back in Inverness in the afternoon.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">NC500 itinerary tips: what to know before you go</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A few practical points that make a real difference on the road. First, drive clockwise from Inverness when considering your NC500 route. This puts the scenic East Coast on your left in the morning light and saves the dramatic West Coast for later in the trip. As a result, most experienced NC500 travellers recommend it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Second, book <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/caithness-accommodation/" type="page" id="271">accommodation</a> on the NC500 as early as possible. The northern section in particular fills up fast, which is why you&#8217;ll need the right place to stay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Third, plan your fuel stops carefully. There are long stretches with no petrol stations, especially on the northwest coast. Fill up in Thurso before heading west. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, download offline maps before you leave. Signal drops out on large sections of the route.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For everything you need to know about where to stay in Caithness, including room options, EV charging, dog-friendly accommodation, and local highlights, visit our full <a href="https://www.ulbsterarmshotel.co.uk/blog/hotels-on-the-nc500/">NC500 accommodation guide</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Road safety and driving resources</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Driving the NC500 requires careful attention due to winding roads and variable conditions. Here are a few important points to note:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Always <a href="https://www.traffic.gov.scot/driving-on-left" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drive on the left</a> side of the road.</li>

<li>Be mindful of single-track roads and use <a href="https://www.traffic.gov.scot/country-roads" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">passing places</a> to pass other drivers safely.</li>

<li>Slow down when approaching bends or hill crests. </li>

<li>Watch for sheep, deer and other animals in the road, especially at dawn or dusk. </li>

<li>Keep a safe distance from other vehicles at all times. </li>

<li>Avoid stopping in the road for photographs, and look for safe places to pull over.</li>

<li>Plan fuel stops in advance, as petrol stations can be far apart.</li>

<li>Keep headlights on during poor visibility. </li>

<li>Drive cautiously in wet or icy conditions. </li>

<li>Respect speed limits and road signs. </li>

<li>Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before starting your trip. </li>

<li>Stay alert and drive responsibly throughout your journey.</li>

<li>Mobile signal may be weak in some areas, so carry a paper map and compass as a backup.</li>

<li>Have an <a href="https://www.traffic.gov.scot/vehicle-emergency-kit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emergency kit</a> in your car, just in case.</li>

<li>Check weather forecasts before setting out each day.</li>
</ul>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take a look at these guides and resources for further details:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Barn owl</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Did you know that Caithness is believed to have the most northerly barn owls in the world? And now you can enjoy them on a birding holiday with us. highlights just how special this region is for wildlife. These elegant, ghostly birds are mostly nocturnal, gliding silently through the dusk and darkness in search of prey, but in the long summer daylight hours of the far north, you might also spot them hunting during the day. Keep an eye out for their distinctive pale shape as they quarter over grasslands, fields, and roadside verges, especially in the quieter hours of early morning or late evening.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Guillemot</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We enjoy spectacular guillemot along our Highland North coastline! Living on the rocky cliffs and sea stacks they come to breed from April to August. But you can enjoy them all year round. Commonly found along our Caithness coastline, on dramatic rocky cliffs and towering sea stacks. Here they gather in noisy colonies. These agile birds come ashore to breed from around April to August, nesting in tightly packed groups on narrow cliff ledges, often side by side with razorbills and kittiwakes. Whilst spring and summer are the core birding months for guillemots in Caithness, you can spot them sometimes offshore throughout the year, diving with ease beneath the waves in search of fish and other marine life. Their upright posture and chocolate-brown plumage make them a distinctive and rewarding sight for birdwatchers exploring the coast.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Razorbill</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if it&#8217;s Razorbills you want to watch on your bird watching holidays in Scotland, then you can enjoy them too along the Caithness coastline during the summer months. As close relatives of the Guillemot you can enjoy both on the same trip. As they come ashore to breed on the region’s steep cliffs and rocky ledges. Similar in shape and size to guillemots, you can distinguish them by their shorter, thicker beak marked with a distinctive white stripe, as well as their striking black-and-white plumage. From April to July, these elegant seabirds gather in busy colonies, often alongside guillemots and puffins, where they lay a single egg on bare rock ledges. Outside the breeding season, razorbills spend most of their lives at sea, making summer the best time to observe them up close as they dive for fish and tend to their young in this wild and beautiful part of Scotland.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Whooper swan</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking for a winter birding holiday in Scotland? In winter, you can enjoy whooper swans. This is a large, graceful bird easily recognised by its striking black and yellow bill and elegant white plumage. Watch the graceful migratory swans in winter in Caithness. Arriving from their breeding grounds in Iceland to take refuge in our Highland sheltered lochs, wetlands, and flooded fields. Enjoy their loud, trumpeting &#8216;whooping&#8217; call, often heard in flight or when gathered in groups. This is what gives them their name and adds a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack to the Caithness winter landscape. Often spotted feeding in small flocks alongside other wintering waterfowl, whooper swans are a majestic sight, especially against the backdrop of frost-covered moorland and low winter light.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Fulmar</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fulmar is a common Scottish seabird. They breed on the cliffs, but you can spot them offshore on the north coast all year round.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Buzzard</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buzzards are commonly spotted in the north of Scotland. You might see these medium-sized birds waiting in the trees for prey, mainly in woodland and moorland habitats.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Kittiwake</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kittiwakes are the only gulls to dive underwater in search of prey. Spotted in the summer breeding season, they are white and grey with black-tipped wings.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Osprey</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a rare but exciting spot, found in Scotland over the summer. The osprey swoops into lochs to catch fish and grabs them out of the water.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">White-tailed eagle</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These amazing birds of prey soar over the rugged landscapes. The white-tailed eagle was discovered in Caithness last year, after almost 100 years!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Greenland white-footed goose</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Greenland white-fronted geese winter in large numbers on the isle of Islay, but some also roost in Caithness, at&nbsp;Broubster Leans Nature Reserve&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Loch of Mey.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
