Why summer in Caithness is hard to beat

This far north, summer days seem to go on forever. In June, it barely gets dark at all, so you can walk the cliffs after dinner or watch the sun sink over the sea well into the night. As a result, a summer break here feels longer than anywhere else in the UK.

The landscape looks its best, too. The rain that falls through the year pays off in summer, when the countryside turns a rich, deep green and wildflowers line the coastal paths. Meanwhile, the seabird colonies along the cliffs are at their busiest, filling the air with life and sound. Put simply, it’s the season to see Caithness at full volume.

Ideal for families and groups

Summer is the season for bigger trips, and the Ulbster Arms Hotel has space for everyone. Alongside the main hotel, three lodge buildings sit within our private grounds. The largest, Dale Lodge, has nine rooms, while Milton Lodge has four and Ulbster Lodge has three. So, groups of friends, fishing parties and extended families can stay close together while still having their own space.

If you’re travelling with children, our family rooms make the summer holidays easy. And because every guest has access to the bar, restaurant and grounds, it’s simple to meet up at the end of each day. See all our accommodation to plan your summer stay.

Testimonials
Lovely stay at Ulbster arms. Room was comfortable, staff were welcoming and the restaurant was great! Exceptional value for money, cannot recommend enough.

My wife and I while backpacking had camped along the banks of the Thurso. We were awaken by a fisherman after a very cold, wet and windy night. He recommended we visit the Ulbster for lunch and a warm drink. The staff had gotten word from the fisherman that my wife and I had slept in the storm that night and were kind enough to put us up in a room at a very discounted price. We were able to shower which had been quit a while and it allowed us to dry out our clothes and equipment. The following morning the staff let us leisurely hangout and even suggested several things we see and do while we finished our tour of scotland. I can not speak highly enough of the staff at the hotel. Dinner was amazing as well !!! If you ever want to hear some amazing fishing stories just take a seat and enjoy. Cant wait to return.

Stayed here 4 times now on fishing trips and it is always excellent. The team are particularly cheery and everything is ” no bother”. Knowledgeable fishing guides as well. Food is good with nice choice at breakfast and the local seafood is very fresh.

Had a great stay here, staff were very friendly and the rooms are clean and well decorated, all staff are very attentive and I will be back again!! Terri was very informative taking us a tour around the hotel and giving advise on local walks and fun things to do.

This place is great!! We had the best meal here tonight, delicious dishes and beautiful presentation, and the deserts were 5 star!! The service we received from the staff was first class, would highly recommend the ulbster arms.
Can’t wait to return.

Fishing on the River Thurso

The River Thurso is one of Scotland’s most productive salmon rivers, yielding over 1,000 salmon a year, and summer brings the grilse run. It usually starts in mid-May, peaks in the middle of July and continues to the end of August. Long evenings give you extra hours on the water, while the river’s rotating beats mean fresh water to fish throughout your stay.

The Ulbster Arms Hotel has been a fishing hotel for around 150 years, so we know exactly what anglers need. For example, there’s a freezer room for any fish you keep, and experienced local ghillies can be hired to share their knowledge of the river. You can even start early, with breakfast ready before you head out. Plan your trip on our River Thurso salmon fishing page.

Long summer evenings over dinner

There’s something lovely about sitting down to dinner with daylight still streaming in. At Beat 4, our summer menus make the most of fresh, seasonal ingredients, with local produce at the heart of every plate. After a full day of exploring, it’s the perfect way to refuel.

Afterwards, take your drink out into the beer garden and enjoy the evening light that lingers so late in the far north. Or, if you’d rather stay inside, the lounge bar is a friendly spot to swap stories from the day. Browse our restaurant and bar pages before you arrive.

Beaches, castles and cliffs this summer

Caithness comes into its own on a sunny summer day. Sinclair’s Bay offers miles of golden sand for a relaxed afternoon, while the dramatic Whaligoe Steps lead down to a tiny historic harbour tucked beneath the cliffs. For something a little grander, the Castle of Mey, once the Queen Mother’s Highland home, makes a memorable day out.

History lovers will also find plenty to discover, from clifftop castle ruins to ancient sites scattered across the county, so take a look at our heritage and history guide. And if wildlife is your thing, our birdwatching guide covers the best spots to see seabirds in summer. For more inspiration, head to our VisitScotland-listed things to do pages.

Adventures with your dog

Long summer days mean long summer walks, and Caithness has plenty to offer dogs and their owners. Reiss Beach, at the southern end of Sinclair’s Bay, has no seasonal dog restrictions, so it’s a great place for an off-lead run. Alternatively, Dunnet Forest’s trails offer shade on warmer days, with dogs kept on the lead along the paths.

Back at the hotel, up to two dogs are welcome in our dog-friendly rooms. So, there’s no need to leave anyone at home this summer.

The dream stop on the NC500

Summer is peak season on the North Coast 500, and a comfortable base in the far north makes all the difference. Halkirk sits a short drive inland from the coastal route, so you’ll enjoy a quieter night away from the busier roads, then rejoin the route refreshed in the morning.

For electric vehicle drivers, our six fast EV chargers are a real advantage during the busiest months, when public chargers along the route can be in demand. Simply plug in when you arrive, and your car can charge while you enjoy dinner.
