Walking at Duncansby Head

For guests of the Ulbster Arms Hotel, Duncansby Head is around a 40-minute drive away. We recommend a visit during your stay with us in the far north of Scotland. This is the northeasternmost point of the British mainland, and it’s a spectacular location for a coastal walk. Just a few miles from John O’Groats, this dramatic headland in the Scottish Highlands offers breathtaking views, rugged cliffs, and some of the most iconic sea stacks in the country.

Duncansby Head Lighthouse

There is a small car park near the Duncansby Head Lighthouse, where you can start your walk. The lighthouse, built in 1924, stands proudly overlooking the vast expanse of the North Sea. Alternatively, for a longer walk, you could park in the larger car park at John O’Groats and then take the coastal path to the lighthouse. This takes about an hour and includes some stunning coastal views.

The Duncansby Stacks

The highlight of this walk is the famous Duncansby Stacks, a series of towering sea stacks that rise dramatically from the sea, and the arched Thirle Door. These are impressive rock formations, shaped by centuries of erosion. The path leading to the stacks runs from the lighthouse, along a cliff edge. From here, you can enjoy amazing views of these natural wonders.

Geo of Sclaites

Just before you reach the stacks, you’ll see the Geo of Sclaites, a dramatic cleft in the cliff face. This is a popular spot for birdwatchers, as it is home to thousands of seabirds that nest on the ledges of the cliff. Look out for puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills and more. Spring and early summer are the best times to see these birds, as they flock to the cliffs to breed.

If you wish, you can continue along this path, past the stacks for yet more awe-inspiring scenery. When you’re ready, simply return back to the car park the same way that you came.

Testimonials

Good location. Good facilities and food. Staff very friendly and helpful. I had an issue with my car on our morning of departure and the hotel was helpful and accommodating.

This is the second time we have stayed here and it was just as good as last time. We stayed in room 7 which was warm and cosy, had everything we needed and had a sizeable bathroom. We did eat here and I can say the fish and chips where amazing, the batter was light and the fish very fresh, breakfast was excellent too and the waitress was welcoming and attentive. Thanks for another faultless stay.

Jess and her staff can’t do enough for you nothing is ever a problem to them, excellent accommodation, the food is always superb would highly recommend staying here , The hotel caters for holiday makers and salmon fishers , with fishing available on one of the best salmon rivers in the UK
